Useful Info: Daily Life: Preventing Frozen Pipes
Useful Info
The harsh Tsugaru winter has a tendency to cause water pipes to freeze during extended periods of cold weather, especially in older homes. Not only is this an inconvenience, as it prevents normal water flow, but there is also a danger that the pipes may burst as the ice inside them expands, requiring hundreds of dollars to fix and hours to clean up. Should temperatures remain at or around freezing for more than one day, take the following precautions before going to bed or leaving for an extended period of time: 1. Turn off the water to each section of the residence.* 2. Briefly open a faucet or valve on each appliance (sink, toilet, bath, shower, etc.) to drain the water in the pipes. 3. Drain the water inside the water heater or boiler by following the directions on the appliance. *Note: The main water shut-off valve for each section of the residence is usually located in the floor and recongnizable by a red handle.
