Most people who come to Japan for the first time are surprised at the extent to which Japan is a cash society, even in large cities.  Most Japanese have never handled a personal check, and until recently credit cards were extremely rare.  Although their popularity as increased in recent years, their use is still usually confined to larger department stores and gas stations.
The majority of transactions with local businesses will need to be done in cash, so it would be wise to have 50-100 USD worth of Japanese Yen in your wallet at all times.  Japan is so cash-oriented that any store, no matter how small, will have no problem breaking a 10,000 Yen bill (about 100 USD), so there is no need to worry about carrying small bills.
Japanese Yen can be withdrawn directly from overseas accounts by using Post Office ATMs, the majority of which have onscreen English guidance.  For more information about withdrawing money from Post Office ATMs, including what kind of cards can be used, please click
