This festival has its origins in horse markets that once operated in the local area. The festival took its present form in 1975 and is now highlighted by a parade of Nebuta-style horses. Uma-ichi is held yearly towards the end of August.

First held in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the rescue attempt of the Cheseborough, the goal of this event is to swim the entire 10,200km (6,300 mile) distance between Tsugaru City and Bath, Maine, USA. The cup is held on the first Sunday in August every year.

Every summer, city residents spend hours handcrafting small-scale versions of Aomori Nebuta floats. These are then paraded through the city streets at the end of July, accompanied by flutes and drums.
