| If you are planning on buying a car, please keep the following information in mind when making your purchase. Winter Weather Due to its location along the Sea of Japan, the Tsugaru Region experiences more snowfall and harsher weather than other parts of Aomori. Snow falls almost daily, and strong winds coming off of the sea create blizzard like conditions on a regular basis. Snow Removal Snow removal in Aomori often differs from that in the United States and other foreign countries. In many cases, accumulated snow turns to ice before it can be properly plowed, turning the road surface into an ice-like sheet of packed snow. Moreover, salt, sand, and other traction enhancing measures are often not used here, creating treacherous road conditions. The Importance of 4WD and ABS Cars equipped with 4WD (Four Wheel Drive) and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) are much better suited for winter driving in the Tsugaru Region than standard 2WD (Two Wheel Drive) cars. Operating a rear wheel drive car is not recommended. Snow Tires and Snow Chains Purchasing a set of either snow tires or snow chains is highly recommended for winter driving, even if your vehicle is equipped with 4WD. |
