    The Izamal Convent and
        Mayan Site of Kabah
The Yucatan, Mexico
The Izamal Convent was built on the site of an active Mayan temple, which the Spanish destroyed in the 16th century.  Converting the Maya and other conquered people to Christianity was always a major Spanish objective.
The convent's church was filled with Mayan worshipers for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.  Portions of this service are in the video.
Right next to the convent was one of the most outrageously
excessive Coca-Cola displays I have ever seen.  Coke also provided a tent and tables which were pure advertising within the convent.  There was little separation of Church and Coke.
In Mexico it seems Coke is Catholic and Pepsi Protestant.
The last Mayan site on this trip was Kabbah and its Palace of Masks.  There are hundreds of masks representing the Maya god Chac.  Some of these masks appeared to have trunks, as above.  Why trunks?  Yet another Mayan mystery.
The Palace of Masks also included this splendid carving of a Mayan King in all his glory.  But it was time to move on.  The video includes a section on the Yucatan Capital of Merida, a splendid city which puts on public entertainment, including a Marima band and great choral group.
We leave the Maya for Mexico City, the Virgin of Guadalupe, and the pre-Aztec pyramids of Teotihuacan.
