| Welcome to Mexico. I was happy to escape the sea resort of Cancun for trip to the Mayan fortress of Tulum, with its spectacular setting overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Tulum has a box-like military design, functional, not pretty. |

| Location really is everything. No other Mayan site can match Tulum, as it presides over lovely shades of blue Caribbean waters. |

| This area of the Yucatan is now called the Mayan Riviera for its beaches. Beaches rarely interest me, but the nearby Xel-Ha Lagoon is gorgeous. |

| Refugees from the beaches can swim or scuba in the lagoon. |
