Tulum, the Maya Fortress & the Xel-Ha Lagoon
The Yucatan, Mexico

Welcome to Mexico. I was happy to escape the sea resort of Cancun for trip to the Mayan fortress of Tulum, with its spectacular setting overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Tulum has a box-like military design, functional, not pretty.

Tulum sits on a cliff, still appearing formidable.

Location really is everything. No other Mayan site can match Tulum, as it presides over lovely shades of blue Caribbean waters.

This area of the Yucatan is now called the Mayan Riviera for its beaches. Beaches rarely interest me, but the nearby Xel-Ha Lagoon is gorgeous.

Refugees from the beaches can swim or scuba in the lagoon.
