Powers: Shaw's mutant ability allows him to absorb kinetic energy and convert it into physical strength. The upper limits to the amount of energy he can contain, and the length which he can contain it, is unknown, but considerable.
History: Born into a poor family, Sebastian Shaw nonetheless became a self-made millionaire businessman by the age of 20, creating Shaw Industries, a multi-national corporation involved heavily with United States defense contracts and munitions. At some point, Shaw was invited to join the Hellfire Club, an elite private organization for the wealthy. Shaw quickly worked his way into a position within the Inner Circle (also called, the Chosen) of the Hellfire Club, whose true purpose was to take over the world. Shaw took the mantle of the Black Bishop (all Hellfire Club titles were based on chess pieces.)
Shaw ousted the White King, then-current leader of the Circle, when the King's plans (to use the Circle to back Dr. Stephen Lang's first creation of the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots) failed. Shaw became the Black King and leader of the Inner Circle and Hellfire Club. Soon after, Shaw Industries began a relationship with the United States' covert Project: Wideawake, continuing to manufacture and develop Sentinel technology.
Shaw had to overcome many attempts to usurp his leadership, including a challenge from renegade White Bishop Donald Pierce, the infiltration of the Club by the mutant heroes, the X-men, and overt hostility from Selene, the Black Queen.
Shinobi Shaw, Sebastian's son, attempted to murder his father with a bomb. Not realizing that his father's mutant ability saved him, Shinobi believed his father dead, and took over much of Shaw Industries. Shaw himself lied low, before revealing to the world he had not died. Shaw took over Shaw Industries once more, and finally worked himself back into the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle.
When Onslaught took over the world Shaw and the Club were very eager to serve
him. After his downfall he quickly became the world's most powerful man,
economically speaking, which made Doom choose him to play a pivotal role in the
Council of Doom, where he serves as liason with the world's economic supporters.
Now that Storm is in charge he has seen an
opportunity he hasn't had before. He will begin to create a plan to eventually
dominate the world.
