Sersi

Real Name: Serse

Class: genetic offshoot of humanity (Eternal)

Occupation: adventurer ; hedonist ; actress/dancer ; former stage magician

Affiliations: member of the Avengers/ Eternals ; member of the New Breed

Scale of Operations: worldwide / New York City

Powers: Like all Earth Eternals, Sersi has complete control over her physiology, such that she was immortal, highly regenerative, and immune to toxins, disease, and radiation. She can manipulate cosmic energy for various effects such as energy control, flight, teleportation, reading minds and casting illusions. Sersi's signature ability is the manipulation of matter, and has attained greater mastery over this discipline than any other Eternal. She can change nearly any creature or object's shape (turning a man into a pig, for example) and can even transmute one substance into another by rearranging sub-atomic particles.

History: Born to Helios and Perse, Sersi is a third or fourth-generation member of the Eternals, evolutionary offshoots of humanity who possess indefinite life spans and superhuman powers. Although she is at least 4,000 years old, Sersi is still considered a young woman by her fellow Eternals.

As a child, Sersi accompanied Utnapishtim, hoping to learn if he was an Eternal. She had a brief encounter with the hero Captain America, who had time-travelled to the past, and her fellow Eternal, the Forgotten One, at this time.

Even though Sersi has always loved the pursuit of pleasure, and she has been known for giving unforgettable parties since the days of ancient Greece, she has always been equally dedicated to her work. Having spent centuries developing her talents for psionically rearranging and transmuting matter, Sersi has gained greater mastery over this discipline than any other Eternal. She had already perfected her psionic abilities by the time of her meeting with Odysseus (the legendary hero known to the Romans as Ulysses) in the 13th Century B.C.

Returning from the Trojan War, Odysseus and his crew landed on the Mediterranean island where Sersi lived. Some of the crew went ashore to explore, and Sersi was pleased to have them as dinner guests. The ravenous sailors gorged themselves with little regard for manners. Becoming drunk, they menaced the beautiful Eternal and her servants. Disgusted, Sersi transformed the sailors into pigs. Her anger having passed, Sersi took a liking to Odysseus when he came to see about his missing men. She turned the pigs back into sailors at his request, and bid them welcome once again. Though initially reluctant, Odysseus and his crew ended up spending an entire year feasting and celebrating at Sersi's villa.

Sersi also visited Camelot during the reign of King Arthur Pendragon. While there, she helped to expose the mutant Maha Yogi, who was at the time impersonating the then-missing sorcerer Merlin. She also visited France during the French Revolution, and witnessed the use of the guillotine. She met the poet Thomas Chatterton at some point, and gave him some pointers in forging his supposed antiquarian poems.

In recent years, Sersi has been living in Manhattan. She rents a large apartment on Manhattan's West Side and a huge loft in Soho. She is famous in New York City social circles and elsewhere around the world as a hostess of lavish and bizarre parties.

When the Eternals and another evolutionary offshoot of humanity, the Deviants, decided to reveal their existence to the rest of the human race, Sersi publicly revealed herself to be an Eternal. The general public, however, tends not to believe in the existence of these hidden races of superhuman beings.

At one time Sersi had a close relationship with Professor Samuel Holden, a man who first publicly spoke out regarding the origins of how the first Deviants, Eternals, and humans were intertwined.

When the Eternals as a whole decided to leave Earth, their collective consciousness in the form of the Uni-Mind decreed that a small number of Eternals who were particularly involved with Earthly matters, including Sersi, remain behind. Although Sersi has often prefers not to involve herself with the Eternals' battles against the Deviants, when those conflicts required her participation, she joined her fellows in such adventures.

On one such occasion, Sersi joined her fellow Eternals to battle the Deviant Priest-Lord Ghaur, whose army attacked Olympia, the Eternals' mountaintop retreat and sanctuary. Ghaur acquired his army through heinous means. As part of the Deviant religion, those citizens found to be genetically unclean were consigned to die in the sacred flame pits. For countless years, Deviants walked solemnly up the temple steps to face their fate in the flame pits, all at the command of Ghaur and his priests. In actuality, however, the Priest-Lord had been taking the best of the Deviants for millennia, condemning them to death under false pretenses, and then secretly storing them in stasis coffins where their minds were slowly wiped clean. The millions of Deviants supposedly sent to the fire pits suffered absolute thralldom so that Ghaur's dreams for conquest over the Eternals might come true. Ghaur's army was defeated, however, when the machinery granting them life was sabotaged by Thena, then- leader of the Eternals on Earth, and Warlord Kro, a rebellious Deviant.

Some time later, Captain America contacted Sersi for help in a case requiring an ally with shape-changing abilities Sersi helped Captain America and began a flirtatious relationship. Later still, Sersi aided Captain America's team, the Avengers, in their struggle against the Deviants and the Elder God Set. When the Forgotton One was injured while serving as an Avenger, the Avengers came to Sersi for help, and she aided them against the otherdimensional Blastaar. Afterwards, Sersi has asked to join the Avengers, and she agreed primarily out of flirtation with Captain America.

Sersi became a dutiful and reliable member of the Avengers. Over the course of her adventures with the team, Sersi developed romantic feelings for her fellow Avenger, the Black Knight, who nevertheless was attracted to their teammate Crystal.

During the Avengers' encounter with the Brethren (an alien version of the Eternals,) Sersi formed a Uni-Mind with them which helped resolve the battle. Unfortunately, this led to Sersi's gradual madness, becoming increasingly mentally unstable, and she began to become more aggressive and even to kill the villainous priest Anskar during the Avengers mission to the dimension of Polemachus. Eventually, representatives of her Eternal family confronted her and the Avengers , saying that Sersi must return to the Eternals, speculating that too much time away from them and their Uni-Mind form was resulting in madness. Sersi refused, for the Eternals' cure for such madness was death. Instead, before they left, the Enternals forced Sersi and the Black Knight to form a mind-merging known as the Gann Josin. Out of a sense of duty, the Black Knight acquiesced to devote himself to Sersi and her mental link.

Sersi was then framed for a series of murder by Proctor, the Black Knight from an alternate reality who was bent on revenge against all versions of Sersi from all different realities. It has also been suggested that her madness was exasperated if not caused outright, by Proctor. Not knowing her true adversary, Sersi felt betrayed by her fellow Avengers, destroying their headquarters and preparing to destroy them with the Black Knight. The Black Knight faltered, however, and broke the Gann Josin bond, freeing himself from Sersi's control. Shocked by his betrayal, Sersi destroyed the Brooklyn Bridge and, seemingly, the Avengers with it.

Sersi was finally approached by Proctor, who revealed himself and his plan. Capturing her, Proctor began to use the life energies of Sersi and Ute, an alien Watcher, to collapse all realities. He was confronted by the Avengers and the Eternals Thena and Sprite, who freed Sersi and Ute. Sersi defeated Proctor, and Ute helped Sersi escape into self-imposed exile to another dimension, believing herself too dangerous to remain on Earth. The Black Knight agreed to join her in exile.

In this alternate reality, Sersi and the Knight were separated, and Sersi was possessed by the spirit of one of one of the Infinity Gems, fabled jewels of power that had once been the embodiment of the being known as Infinity. The Gem that possessed Sersi had been separated from its fellow Gems for untold millennia, and now intended to use Sersi to be reunited with them once more, for the six other Gems had also been transported to this dimension, along with Loki, the Norse God of lies.

In the meantime, the Black Knight had joined the crime fighting team Ultraforce, and Sersi sought them out. Loki took control of the six Gems, and Sersi, on behest of the Seventh Gem, convinced Ultraforce to wrest control of the six Gems from Loki. They failed, and with her last act of free will before the Seventh Gem took control of her completely, Sersi returned Ultraforce to their base.

The Elder of the Universe known as the Grandmaster traveled to this dimension to regain his Mind Gem from Loki, and the two wagered a game which pitted the Ultraforce against the Avengers. The Grandmaster lost the wager, revealing the location of the Seventh Gem to Loki. Instead of gaining ultimate power, however, Loki lost the Gems as they formed a separate being called Nemesis. Nemesis began a series of cosmic creations, and the Avengers and Ultraforce joined forces to stop her, and ultimately the Black Knight separated the Gems once more. In the resulting explosion, the Avengers were returned to their Earth, while Ultraforce, Sersi and the Black Knight returned to the Ultraverse.

Eventually, Sersi apparently regained her emotional stability and her and the Black Knight decided to return to their own Earth. They managed to do so after an accidental side trip to the time of the Crusades. On returning to present-day Earth, the couple were separated again. Sersi found herself in the undersea kingdom of Lemuria, and learning of yet another plot by Ghaur, Sersi sought the hero team Heroes for Hire, of which Black Knight had become a member. After defeated Ghaur, Sersi formally broke up with the Black Knight.

Sersi returned to the Eternals home on Olympia, returning to New York to briefly aid the Avengers in re-assembling the team after a long hiatus. Later still, she joined a group of Eternals posing as a human team of crime fighters calling themselves the New Breed, and fought the Deviants, who had become mindless monsters. During this time she used the code-name Mesmer.

She remained in Olympia, even though when all the Eternals decided to leave the planet. She remained there, with her cousin Pixie. They both had grown very attached to Earth. Eventually they were summoned by Storm to stop the evil that is Apocalypse. She joined the Resistance and has been a member ever since.
