A little something about Friday
Smartships are alien space craft given artificial intelligence and develop
strong ties to their operators by their creators, the alien Kymellians. They are
capable of independent action and creative thought.
Smartship Friday was originally the property of Aelfyre "Whitey"
Whitemane, who
was a Kymellian scientist whose duty was the observation of Earth's humans. He
monitored Earth communications transmissions through his Smartship. Both Whitey
and his Smartship developed a deep affection for humanity through studying
Earth's literature; indeed, the Smartship named itself "Friday" after a
character in Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe.
When Whitey was attacked by the war-like Snarks who attempted to gain a power
source from Dr. James Power, Whitey gave his superhuman powers and ownership of
Friday to the children of Dr. Power, who became the pre-adolescent team of
adventurers known as Power Pack. Friday helped the Power Pack through many
adventures, although the Smartship often returned to Kymellia.
More recently, when Alex Power became a member of the team New Warriors, Friday
was used by that team on occasion. In Alex's last adventure with the Warriors,
the Smartship Friday was stolen, recovered, and nearly destroyed in the process
of saving humanity from the threat of the alien Dire Wraiths. Friday barely
survived, and the ordeal led Alex to think that, if it were Power Pack in action
instead of just Alex, that team probably could have found a way to save Friday-no
New Warrior seemed to care for Friday as much as Alex. Alex recovered Friday,
whose intelligence was saved in the Pack's home computer.
When Power family moved to Washington, the Power Pack almost immediately
embroiled in a civil war happening on Snark World. Friday was given a new
Starship body in order that the Pack might travel for this adventure, and Friday
returned the Pack to Earth, continuing to be their friend and transportation.
Friday possesses all the capabilities as any space-faring Smartship, and is able
to teleport passengers for short distances within planetary atmosphere and even
transform into "land-vehicle" mode. Friday can repair itself and even create
various artifacts like Star Trek's replication processes.
Katie is accompanied in her journey by the kymellian Artificial Intelligence
known as Friday. Once Power Pack' spaceship, this AI currently resides in
Katie's watch, ready to help the young girl. The computer has powerful sensors
and has no powers of its own. It's just a big database with tons of knowledge (yes,
knowledge is power I know, but you know what I mean).
