Cyclops
Longtime
leader of the X-Men, Scott Summers is cursed with optic blasts that fire
whenever he opens his eyes. Cyclops must wear a protective ruby-quartz
visor to hold these destructive beams in check -- or risk destroying
everyone and everything around him!
Real
name: Scott Summers
Occupation: Adventurer

Westchester County, New York
First appearance: X-Men (Vol. 1) #1 (1963)
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 185 lbs.
Eye color: Glowing red
Hair color: Brown
History:
Scott Summers was the first of two sons born to Major Christopher Summers,
a test pilot for the U.S. Air Force, and his wife, Katherine. Major
Summers was flying his family home from vacation aboard a vintage aircraft
when a midair accident crippled the Summers' plane. Katherine pushed Scott
and his brother, Alex, out the door with the only available parachute.
With Christopher and Katherine presumed dead, the authorities separated
the two boys: Alex was adopted, but Scott remained comatose in a hospital
for a year. On recovering, he was placed in an orphanage in Omaha,
Nebraska. Years later, as a teenager, Scott began to suffer from severe
headaches and eyestrain. He was sent to a specialist, who discovered that
lenses made of ruby quartz corrected the problem.
While Scott
was visiting a large city, his mutant power finally erupted -- bursting
forth in an uncontrollable blast of optic force that demolished a crane,
causing it to drop its payload toward a terrified crowd. Scott saved the
onlookers' lives by obliterating the object with another blast. But the
bystanders rallied into an angry mob, believing that he had tried to kill
them. Scott fled, escaping on a freight train. The telepathic, telekinetic
Professor Charles Xavier rescued the youngster from an abusive foster
parent and enlisted him as the first member of the X-Men, a team of young
mutants he planned to train to use their powers -- and in time, stand in
defense of a world on the brink of genetic war.
As Cyclops,
Scott became deputy leader of the X-Men. While he was a natural field
general, his social skills were somewhat lacking. Scott had fallen in love
with teammate Jean Grey, born with the powers of telepathy and telekinesis,
but his reserved demeanor prevented him for years from expressing his
feelings. When Xavier's other original recruits left the fold following an
encounter with the sentient island-being Krakoa, Cyclops stayed on as
deputy leader of the "new" X-Men. Shortly thereafter, the cosmic entity
known as the Phoenix Force took Jean's place on the team. When the Phoenix
Force committed suicide, Scott believed the love of his life had died.
Grief-sticken, he left the X-Men. After returning to the team, Scott met
and married Madelyne Pryor -- unaware she was a clone of Jean created by
the master geneticist called Mr. Sinister. Scott and Madelyne had a baby
boy, Nathan Christopher, and Cyclops again parted ways with the X-Men.
When the
real Jean emerged from suspended animation, Scott left his wife and
rejoined the original X-Men to establish a new team:
X-Factor. Madelyne went insane, developed superhuman powers and perished
in combat with Jean. After Cyclops and the founding members of X-Factor
returned to the X-Men, the mutant warlord known as Apocalypse infected
Nathan with a techno-organic virus. To save his son's life, Scott was
forced to allow a time-traveling member of the Askani Clan to transport
Nathan two millennia into the future, where it had been foreseen that he
deliver would the world from annihilation at the hands of Apocalypse.
Inevitably, Scott married Jean. While they were on their honeymoon, Mother
Askani -- matriarch of the Askani Clan -- drew their spirits into the
future. There, they inhabited new bodies; as Slym and Redd, the couple
raised Nathan into early adolescence. When Scott and Jean returned to
their own time and bodies, Nathan remained in the 30th century; he would
mature into his time's greatest hero: Cable.
When Xavier became Onslaught
and started taking over the world, Scott was shocked at first; but then
saw the world that Xavier was making. A world devoid of war, crime, and
prejudice. A world Cyclops wanted to be a part of his whole life. Formerly
married to Jean Grey, he left her after she contined returning Wolverine's
affections one too many times, and is a full believer of Xavier's dream of
a peaceful, perfect world. He is pretty much the "Number Three" man in
rank, after Xavier himself and probably Magneto. He inspires hope in folks
for Xavier's cause, and was, naturally, the first X-Corp. Onslaught
rewarded Cyclops for his faithfulness to the cause by serving him the "super-soldier"/vita-ray
treatment that had been given to Captain America, USAgent, Protocide, and
Nomad (Banner and Stark figured out how to do it), as well as some more
training. Much as Cap is the symbol of the Rebels, Cyke is the symbol of
the X-Corps.
Powers: Cyclops' mutant power has always been to shoot optic blasts from
his eyes. These are high-powered "force blasts" made of an energy that was
first thought to be solar, but lord knows what it is now. They shoot at a
target at hundreds of miles per hour and can have devistating results. A
weak blast could knock out a man; a full power blast could level a
mountain and destroy titanium (it has been theorized that they could even
destroy adamantuim at "full" power). Cyclops has long been dependant on
Ruby lenses to halt/control these rays, but after the "supersoldier"
treatment, he has some control of them. Basically, if you yank his glasses/viser
off, he isn't helpless and can battle on. However, as this is a strain for
him, he uses his viser at all times. His optic blasts can be direct, wide
to hit multiple targets, and even bounce off things, hitting a foe in the
back or many things in one zap.
Since
taking the "supersoldier" serum, Cyclops is physically at the "peak human"
level, like Cap. He can lift 800 lbs. off the ground, and can run at 30-35
miles per hour. His reaction time is above normal human level, but not
superhuman. With his many years of training, he can react to some
superhuman opponents now, although he isn't as fast as say, Spider-Man.
Since he was a good athlete without the serum, WITH it, his agility is at
superhuman levels (like Gambit). He can also take more damage than a
normal man (not a whole lot, but more), and, like Cap, just about never
gets tired in the heat of combat. Like any animal, adrenaline may enhance
his stats (nothing like Wolverine or Hulk, though).
Cyclops has a working knowledge of all martial arts, but is most familiar
with Judo, the art of using your enemy's weight and momentum against them
(saw a comic where he knocked Colossus on his ass once!). He can also use
guns and melee weapons well, just chooses not to.
As for armor, his costume is Kevlar and his boots are steel-toed. The
yellow bands of metal around his arm and various places on his outfit are
actually Vibrium, the same indestructable alloy that Cap's famous shield
is made from. So, he can use that arm to block stuff sometimes, since the
metal absorbs impact completely into itself, without making the wearer go
flying. His black trench is also Kevlar, and a communicater is attached to
his visor
Cyclops is also very smart and a good strategist, having led the X-Men
since his teenage years.
Cyclops was awarded this armor and visor by Onslaught after winning his
tournament of leaders. It was built by Reed Richards and this is very
sophisticated.
The armor is meant for defense measures. It can withstand water, fire, TK,
and energy attacks, and outer space. It would take multiple, multiple
blows of 100 tons of force or more to crack it, even though it looks light.
He could wear it in a battle against the Hulk, for instance. The Boots
also can stick to walls via magnetism. He can also use this to leap great
distances or run at superhuman speeds.
The gauntlets increase the damage level of his punches to the 1-2 ton
class, and can emit grappling hooks made from metal alloys. It has it's
own air supply and life vitals.
The visors amplify the strength of his optic blasts 100 times over. And
old "Full Power" blast was rumored to be able to shatter a mountain or
destroy titanium. With these visors on, their is little matter that an
optic blast could not destroy; a full power one could level a small city.
Of course, they still travel from his eyes at 100-200 mph.
After Onlaught was defeated,
Cyclops suffered a severe beating by Venom. He now lies comatose in a
hospital.
Jean Grey, once her powers
awakened was able to bring Scott back, he is currently with the X-Men
