Beagles are happy-go-lucky and friendly, making them a wonderful family pet. They are also favored for their compact size and short easy to care for coat. Since they lived in packs for hundreds of years, they naturally enjoy the company of other dogs and humans. A sturdy hunting dog, the Beagle should look like a foxhound in miniature. His hunting ability, combined with a merry personality, has made the Beagle one of the most popular dogs in the United States according to AKC® Registration Statistics. The most famous Beagle of all is Snoopy from the comic strip "Peanuts." Today's Beagle comes in two height varieties (13 in. and 15 in.) and any true hound color, including tri-color, red and white and lemon. According to the A.K.C. standard beagles should be no more than 15” tall at the shoulders.  Beagles at dog shows are divided into two varieties, those under 13” and those that are over 13” but under 15”.  Beagles should weight between 15—28 pounds.

 

Where can I buy a "pocket" or "miniature" beagle?

Pocket beagles were bred in the 1300's and 1400's and were said to be about 9" at the withers (shoulder). There is no such thing as a modern-day pocket beagle and in fact, the term "pocket beagle" has become synonomous with poor quality puppies bred for the pet market, and often sold to pet shops. Reputable (U.S.) breeders breed according to the Standard defined by the American Kennel Club, which includes two height varieties: not exceeding 13" at the withers, and not exceeding 15". The light bones, high ear sets and toyish heads that tend to go along with very small sized beagles are listed as faults.

In addition to not breeding according to the standard, the majority of "pocket beagle" breeders allow many of the common genetic defects (e.g., hip dysplasia and epilepsy) to be passed along. The result is often an unhealthy dog. Our beagles are listed as mini-beagles for being the smaller of the two sizes.

 

What are "bluetick" / "lemon" / "red and white" beagles?

Beagles come in a variety of colors. Most common are the tri-colors, brown, black and white. Ticking refers to spots of color, and blue ticking is a grayish black which appears to have a blue tinge to it.

 

How much do beagles cost?

A beagle puppy can vary considerably in price depending on where it is purchased, from whom, and whether it is of "pet-quality" or "show-quality", the latter meaning that it has a high degree of conformance to the breed standard. Prices can range from $300 to $800 or more for a show-quality beagle. Our beagles are meant as family pets but are AKC registered and can participate in AKC dog shows or events and used as hunting dogs if trained properly.
