The United States is a country with many roads. Roads are dominated by cars, trucks, motorcycles and all sorts of other motorized vehicles. The advantage of automobiles over trains or planes is, of course, the freedom. A person's car is controlled only by that person. There is no larger organization regulating or directing these cars. No one needs to raise bridges, clear runways or switch rails to make sure the cars can get around. Cars are more dangerous and pollute more, but these are sacrifices the people of the United States are willing to make. If the stock market crashes tomorrow and the government breaks down, no one will be able to take the train anywhere- they will loot and pillage by automobile. Gas barons will hoard the remaining fuel and pine-scented car fresheners will become the national currency. Where are my keys? |
