Traindodge: Oklahoma's answer to Wisconsin's hordes of rock bands. Tight guitar work, punctual vocals, engrossing melodies.
The Public 8 Ball: Lots of sites offer CGI-driven "artificial" 8 balls, but some on the internet feel that just ain't right. This site actually has a robot shake a real 8 ball and then display it before a webcam for the full effect.
Famous Birthdays: I share my birthday with Isaac Asimov, Dennis Hastert, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Christy Turlington. Find out which famous people were also born on your birthday.
Camera List Page: Webcam's are everywhere now. What's next? The oval office? Inside a uterus? The moon?
The Synthesis: Music / culture magazine based in Chico, California.
Addicted to Noise: Sleater-Kinney interview, South by Southwest photos, etc.
Adler Planetarium webcam: Live view of Chicago skyline from the Adler Planetarium.
Built to Spill: Northwestern rock band. Very good. |
General stuff
06/24/00 ~ 5:20 p.m. I haven't updated the site in about a week, so I added some new things. The main page is laid out a bit differently now. For convenience, I have decided to post the shows and events (formerly in "dates") here in the news section, to the left and down a bit. I left the site alone for awhile to start working on issue five, due out late August / early September. Still plenty of time for contributions. I saw "Stir of Echoes," which features Kevin Bacon in a Social Distortion T-shirt and lots of shots reminding you it's Chicago (Look! Another El!). Allison and I also saw "Chicken Run" last night, which was very funny and charming. Excellent garage sale finds today. I picked up Double Dragon II (left) and Blades of Steel for the old 8-bit Nintendo system. Later in the morning I found a very cheap and functional camera (below), Pearl Jam's Vs. and the grand prize, a Def Leppard shirt. Even if I never wear it (which I probably won't), it was still well worth the $0.25 I paid for it. |

My sister leaves for Europe tomorrow, and she is borrowing my good camera to take pictures while she is there. I probably won't be able to take as many pictures for the next three weeks, but I should get it back in time to shoot some of the great shows in late July and August. I am also looking for zines and independent magazines, either in the Chicago area or the larger world. If anyone would like to trade zines, give me a link to a website / webzine, or just let me know what they're working on, I would appreciate it. "Information is not knowledge. Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is not truth. Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love. Love is not music. Music is the best." -Frank Zappa
06/26/00 ~ 3:54 p.m. Did you know that Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth is 47? I saw them play a few weeks ago and she sure didin't look 47... Anyway there is an interview with her here. Also see Sonic Youth's involvement with movies here and a detailed summary of the Simpon's episode they appeared in here. Did you know that original drummer Richard Edson was the garage attendant in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off?" Copper Press, the rock/jazz/snowboarding/design/et cetera magazine now has frequent updates with online-only material. Check it out. |
