06/11/00 ~ 2:05 p.m. Yesterday was great. I found some fantastic stuff at a garage sale- The soundtrack to the movie "Dune" (on vinyl, still in the plastic, complete with a Brian Eno track), A-ha's "Scoundrel Days," a cassette head cleaner and a dictating machine, all for under $5.00. Last night David and I went to the Riviera Theater to see Quix*o*tic, Stereolab and Sonic Youth. I'm not sure about Quix*o*tic, they were very together and did the whole instrument switching thing, they were good but didn't blow me away. They played for about 40 minutes. Stereolab was great, I really should have gone out of my way to see them sooner. Their songs really come across as being much groovier live, I have to admit I was bobbing my head through the entire set. They played a solid hour of old and new stuff. Sonic Youth took about 40 minutes to get on the stage, probably because they have literally dozens of guitars with bizarre tunings to deal with. In addition to their regular lineup, Jim O'Rourke, who produces both Sonic Youth and Stereolab, played guitar with them. Lee Ranaldo is getting pretty gray but Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon both look surprisingly young, although they must be around 40 years old. They played a mix of old and new stuff, most of it more obscure tracks- nothing off "Daydream Nation," "Experimental Jet Set..." or "Evol"- for almost an hour and a half. Free Games: A fairly extensive list of free internet games. The descriptions sound like they were written by someone who speaks English as a second language- "It is not hard, but not easy and is of a nice speed." Pac Man: A java-driven Pac-Man game, very true to the original. Phat games: Yeah, I've been playing a lot of games lately. This is another good site. Try Iceblox. Internet Traffic Report: See just how busy the internet is in your part of the world as compared to elsewhere. Get Random: I think this is my new favorite site. It will search out either a random "geek" news site, a random news site, a random comic strip or a random site that has some sort of random generator. The last is especially cool and can keep me online for longe periods of time. I found some really interesting stuff like this, this and especially this. Andre Gardner: I'm not sure why he needs his own domain name, but he has a great list of links. I recommend Corncam (actually watch the corn grow) Metallicster (like Napster but harder to trace users) and Exploding Dog (people send captions to the artist and he draws cartoons to match them). This one is my favorite. Time wasting page: Is it really a waste if it's this much fun? Great links, I especially recommend The Ultimate Build Your Own Cow Page, Bill Gate's Personal Wealth Clock and the live waterholes at Africam. Project K, the band I met at the Fireside Bowl a week ago, has a very cool online tour diary. It looks like they take pictures of everything and it looks like they have a very fun time on tour. There is a picture of me looking very peevish right around page 23... Speaking of, here is an old Chisel tour diary that is quite entertaining... Voyeur programs allow you to see what other people are currently entering into various search engines. Whether it is "Trap doors," "irregular menstrual cycle" or "who should I vote for?" it is highly entertaining to see what people are looking for. There is a comprehensive list of search voyeur sites here. Everyone loves a mad lib. Here's what I got:
Writing a thesis is a very excruciating task. You stay up for 0 hours and then you sleep for 330 hours. You dilate, you verify and then you pounce. If your venerable thesis advisor is a pulley, then you will have to rearrange your thesis, or at least pray to the expectant ladies of Thesis. With any luck, after 44 years, you will have a succulent thesis. Either that, or you will be kicked out to live in the gong where you will be forced to work as a carpet salesmen.
