Born on the 8th of February,1941 in shriganganagar in Rajasthan, INDIA, among the finest

Jagjit's ghazals brings out the emotional side of ghazal and poetry lovers. His ghazals do
a wonderful job in delivering tranquility (where "mai-khana" is involved,
passion, serenity, pain ("sweet pain" in love), deepness, grief, love and a
reminder of one's own personal past. He is voice, a true gift of God has the pain that an
"ashiq" feels after loosing his beloved, the love that a mother seeks for her
child, the tranquility that a "saaqi" delivers, the willing fear that a boy has
when she walks in the room. His deep voice holds the key to perhaps every emotion locked

Awards
If a gifted singer dries a tear or soothes a heart in pain - for sure his verse is dear to
God and not a stanza has been sung in vain", says the ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh for
whom the biggest award in life has been his massive fan following not only in India but
also across the globe. Nevertheless, his talent has been appreciated by various recognized
institutes in the Art and Music industry.
Recently in the year 1999 the Sahitya Akademi for the first time honored four non-literary
figures for popularizing the works of the great Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib. Apart from music
director Gulzar, actor Naseeruddin Shah, singer and actress Suraiya, the award was
conferred on Jagjit Singh who sang as well as composed the music for the serial Mirza
Ghalib.
In the year 1998 he was the eminent recipient of the Lata Mangeshkar Award, established by
the Madhya Pradesh State Government. Jagjit Singh says that its a great pleasure to
receive an award named after a person whose birth is one of the greatest events of this
century.The award carries a momento and a cheque of rupees one lac, which he returned for
utilizing in a child welfare and care project.
In 1996 he was felicitated with The Giants International Award. In 1998 he was honored
with the Jayawati Modi Award and in 1999 the Journalist Award for Music. The Kurukshetra
University conferred him with a delight in Music in 1993. |
