What is IGSC?

The International Graduate Student C* (IGSC) is a CUPE3903 body that advocates on behalf of graduate international students on campus. It was founded in winter 2001, as a result of international students' activism during the longest strike ever at York University.

Our general mandate is to improve the general situation of international graduate students, be they Teaching Assistants, Graduate Assistants or Research Assistants.

We serve as an advocacy group in the union and on campus at large, addressing international students' financial and academic concerns through the process of bargaining and through other forms of political pressure.

We also serve as a forum for discussion, activism and socializing, providing a space for international students to meet each other and share their issues and concerns.

During our first year we succeeded in:

Securing the caucus (or committee) as a visible point of reference for international graduate students members of CUPE3903.

Pressuring York International to automatize the standard compulsory procedure for UHIP enrolment (international students health insurance), instead of having students manually enroll each year.

Pointing out the problems and contradictions present in how the FGS/CUPE bursary is currently administered to international students, especially international students in FES (Faculty of Environmental Studies)
