EUROPE - SHORT INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY |
Ireland has been the home of Gaelic Games for several centuries and the first official organization was set up in Ireland in 1884. Since then the games have grown in the country and are now the most popular on the island with the culmination of the summer All-Ireland championships every year drawing huge crowds where the finales of the Hurling and Football championships take place in Irelands biggest sporting stadium, Croke Park. There are 2604 clubs in Ireland.
Strong connections have always been forged between Ireland and its neighbour Britain. Emigration in both directions has made easier the spread of Gaelic Football to Britain and it is now played in England, Scotland and Wales. London, where Gaelic Games are most concentrated, has more clubs than both Carlow and Leitrim and enters a team into the annual All-Ireland championships and in the Allianz NFL. These are one of the minnows of the competition but have improved steadily in recent years.
There are more than 20 clubs in 10 countries of mainland Europe. Records of Hurling being played in Europe date back centuries. 2000 saw the first year of the European League and this was won by Paris. The game is becoming increasingly popular on the continent with more and more European "natives" taking up Gaelic Football. A Hurling club was set up by a group of Swiss nationals in Zurich and they have played games in Holland, Germany and France. The most recent growth of clubs has taken place in Spain with the additions of Madrid and Costa Del Sol.
