| Detroit Tigers Team Anlaysis Team Page *NOTE - This analysis is strictly the opinion of the Red Sox GM, and was done as objectively as possible and stricly for the fun of it |
||||||||||||||||||||||
| Team History/Comments - Detroit has been dominant in the central Division so far, though strength of schedule could be a factor... One reason i chose to evalate this team is the remarkable record | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Rotation - Detroit has a good rotation, though no real ace (Park is not an ace, I won't bend on that. he's a good #2, a #1 onmany staffs, but theres a difference between an ace and a #1). Remarkably, the only starter with an ERA over 4 is Helling who also leads the team in losses with 3 | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Lineup - This lineup really has only one legit .300 hitter (Abreu) and I'm not sure what baffles me more, seeing Tyler Houston batting cleanup, or seeing that he's leading the team in HR's with 10. The Tiger's offensive key seems to be a balanced attack with 11 players (including all the starters) with at least 10 rbi and 14 runs (except the back-up catcher Meluskey who has 7 runs scored), though no player has more than 30 rbi or 35 runs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Fielding - A decent fielding team with no glaring liabilities, nor any exceptional position players. The outfield has good range, but the only strong arm is Abreu's. On the infield the most sure defender is probably Lowell at 3b. Davis is a fair catcher at best. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Bullpen - A very strong bullpen. Percival is a very good closer and has held a 2.51 era to date with 11 saves. The team has also gotten 11 saves from 5 other pitchers. Kim, Paniagua and Quantrill have served very well in relief also. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Bench - Not an overwhelming strength, but solid with Meluskey being productive off the bench. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Minors/Reserves - No exceptional backups either. Bautista is out for three months with a dislocated shoulder. No remarkable prospects. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Strengths/Weaknesses - The team's pitching has likely benfitted from playing in spacious Comerica Park. The offense is not really primed towards the longball, so the team hasn't suffered from their home field. This team has few stars and instead seems to be a tea of solid, predictable, well-rounded players. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Prescription - A win now mentality seems to be in mind with no welldeveloped prospects, though few of the players on the roster are at risk of passing their prime. Adding some speed to the lineup might not hurt, though you can't argue with his record. Several of the starters seem to be overachieving and have to wonder when they wil retrn to Earth. The mentality seems to be get through the 5th or maybe sixth inning and let the bullpen bring it hoe as they've pitched a lot of innings. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
| Overall grade A Can't argue with the results. This team has played very well with the emphasis being on the TEAM. Has few remarkable players, but no holes either. It will be interesting to see if the rotation can handle the playoffs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
