| Team History - To the current GM's credit, he inherited a flawed team with almost no pitching and poor defense. Since taking over the team has improved defensively and offensively, but as we all know, pitching is the key | |||||||||||||||||||
| Pitching - While any team that plays in Coors is going to have pitching problems, this particular team has SERIOUS pitching problems. Terry Adams and Paul Wilson are the teams two best starters and are currently a combined 3-8 with a 6.75 era. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Batting - This is a lineup with the potential to hit a lot of homers. Sweeney Gonzalez, Branyan and Ventura should all be good for about 30 homers each, possibly more. Branyan is by far Colorado's best hitter right now, with a .413 avg and 9hr's in only 17 games. Unfortuntely, Branyan has also struck out 17 times in those 17 games. Sweeney has carried the team thus far with a .360 avg over 47 games. While not much is expected of most catchers offensively, Brown's 57 K's in 48 games has to be seen as a liability. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Fielding - The Rockies are 4th from the bottom in fielding percantage and in stolen base percentage with 11 errors at ss being the most obvious problem, though primarily due to Roberts who's been removed from the field for the defensively superior Cabrera as well as the replacemnt of Lamb at third by Ventura. Branyan is a liability in left, but his offense (hopefully) compensates. Catcher is a position that could be upgraded with a receiver such as Pena, Prince, Widger or Fasano | |||||||||||||||||||
| Bullpen - Stronger than the rotation but no real go to guy with closer Roberts holding down a 6.10 era and only one save. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Bench - Good hitters off the bench in Lamb and Lee as well as Kapler | |||||||||||||||||||
| Minors/Reserves - Some pretty good backups so that if he has any injuries he should be ok hitting wise. No pitchers though and no real prospects that jump out at you. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Strengths/Weaknesses - The Rockies offense is Solid, having scored more runs (267) than all but two teams in the IBC, Boston and the Chicago WS. Unfortunately, Colorado's pitching has also allowed 80 more runs (335) than have been scored for him, which leads the IBC. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Prescription - Take a chance on some pitching prospects for the future, in the meantime, replace Brown at catcher and try to deal one of those sluggers for a solid groundball pitcher. That or buy a big refrigerator. | |||||||||||||||||||
| Overall grade C+ This team is better than it's record, but has a long way to go. Pitching. | |||||||||||||||||||
