| Team Profile/History - One of the original 30 GM's, Nick (or xXx) was the original Trader Bob and has had 85 different players on his roster at various times. Lineup - A very solid lineup from the speedy Rollins at the top to the plundering but still powerful Conine at the bottom. Luis Gonzalez is the biggest bat on the team by far. Watch out for Brett Boone as he's showing his 2001 numbers were an aberration (hitting below his career mark of .264, but displaying plus power still. P.S. this guy is a typical reason for why steroid testing is a must.) Bench - Karros is a starter on many teams so he's addefinite luxury off thebench and provides a real power threat. Most of the others are defensice replacements. Defense - Boone, Gonzalez and Beltre are all plus defenders. No special OF arms, though Williams can be a liability. Lo Duca has a very good arm behind the plate Rotation - Morris has been excellent and Appier's been pretty good too. I'd question the decision to start Smoltz, but that's just me. Can't complain about Burnett and Stephens at the back of your rotation Bullpen -Koch is a very good closer and Remlinger is as good a lefty as you can find. Baldwin is a nice option to have in the pen (though I'd switch him and smoltz, but again, that's just me). Other than Koch there isn't a killer righty in the pen, though several of the starters are capable of logging mucho innings so it's probably not a big problem. Minors - Lots of young prospects, some I've never heard of but they look pretty decent. May have a few guys he can use next year (hopefully, because with 8 non-d-base guys he may have a problem if any serious injuries arise) Overall Grade - A- Doesn't get an A because he doesn't scare me. The pitching is good, very good in fact, but I wouldn't be terrified of facing any of those guys like I would with a Johnson, Schilling, maddux or artinez (though those guys are never available to get anyhow). Same with the Hitting. VERY solid, but Gonzo is the only REALLY scary batter. Gotta scare me to get an A. Over/Under Over - Paul lo Duca - 7 hr's in the MLB, 23 in the IBC Under - No one really, the mark of a good solid team Prescription - Better take the division this year because next year the Cubbies come to town or else Oakland's boys grow up. |
