The Intermountain Rail System rosters 31 GP38-2s, 4 GP38ACs, and 12 GP40s. The GP38ACs were purchased second-hand from Canadian Pacific in 1998. Three of them have been repainted, while the fourth has had it's reporting marks restenciled but soldiers on in CP action red. The GP38-2s and GP40s were all inherited from Monashee Central, although several have been rebuilt and most of the GP40s upgraded to dash 2 standards. Most have been repainted into the current IRS livery, but a few oddballs can still be seen throughout the system, including 3 GP40s still wearing vintage 1980 (albeit very weathered) Monashee Central paint.
