Mother's Milk

Tabitha Walrond was 19 when her son Tyler was born in June 1997. When she was 15, she had breast-reduction surgery. She also had an infection following Tyler's birth. He was therefore fed formula for the first ten days of his life. Tabitha then breast-fed him for the remainder of his 7 weeks. Tyler died from malnourishment. It may have been because of Tabitha's surgery or her post-birth infection. Her breast milk did not have enough nutrients for Tyler to grow like a normal baby. Tabitha tried to get her son a doctor's visit, but was told he needed permanent HMO and Medicare cards. Those came after Tyler's death. She was chaged with criminally neglient homicide even though she did everything she thought she was supposed to do for her child. She was convicted and given five years probation.
