Nicky laughed as Shane yelled at him, it was all going through one ear and
out the other. Unaware that he'd confessed to been high, Kian walked round
the corner, searching for them both.
"Shane! Get off him!" He raced over and pulled Shane off him,
Nicky was
still grinning inanely
Kian couldn't believe that Shane was acting like this "What's come
over you?"
"Ask him. Just ask him!" Shane spat
Kian looked at Nicky and didn't like what he saw "Have you been
drinking?"
He asked quietly. Nicky just laughed in Kian's face, this angered him and he
shoved him hard against the wall "Have you been drinking! Tell me
now!"
Nicky ran his hand across his nose "No. No.No.No" He sang,
spinning his
arms around, knocking Kian off his feet.
Shane felt sick, the signs were all there, yet he didn't pick up on them, or
chose to ignore them, he pulled Kian to his feet and whispered "Get
Anto now"
Kian nodded, walking backwards, still focused on Nicky, he then ran down the
corridor, throwing doors open, calling out.
"Where's the fire!" Anto yelled as Kian found him. The look on
Kian's face
told him something was wrong, seriously wrong
"Nicky. Come quick." Kian dragged him back to where he left
them. The image
he saw now, was completely different to what he'd left just minutes before.
Nicky had calmed down completely, he was laid out on the floor, shivering.
Shane was petrified, he had placed his jacket around him, but still Nicky was
shaking.
Anto took charge of the situation. Firing questions at Kian and Shane. Kian
couldn't really respond, he was in the dark.
Shane on the other hand knew but kept quiet "He's exhausted Anto"
"Seems to be more than that. Look at the sweat pouring off him. This isn't
making any sense Shane. Now tell me what you know!"
"I already told you, it's exhaustion!" Shane yelled
"I'm not about to get into this here. Kian, you stay here, Shane, you take
him back to the hotel. You obviously know something, so you can stay with
him, until I let Louis know"
"You can't tell Louis!" Shane felt the fear in him grow
"If it's only simple exhaustion, why can't Louis know?"
Shane kept silent. Anto knew him too well. He knew he was lying, but he felt
like he had to. He just prayed he'd be okay
"What the hell...." Nily exclaimed when she returned to her
flat, the door
had been kicked in. Her whole apartment was in disarray. At first she
panicked, thinking she'd been raided, but then it dawned on her who it was.
Finding Nicky's wallet on the floor, she immediately snatched it up, and
pulled a wad of notes out, she was furious and planned to make him pay for
what he'd done
She smiled as she called the police, reporting a break in. She knew she could
link the whole break in, back to Nicky. His fingerprints would be over the
whole apartment.
"God dammit" She cried, finding her stash missing.
"You will pay for this
Nicky, one way or another"
She rushed out of her flat, eagerly needing more stash, and hoping to break
him piece by piece. Glancing at her watch, knowing she couldn't be long
Shane stayed with Nicky in his hotel room, he hated the sight of him. The
shaking had stopped, it was replaced with frantic sniffing, and occasional
lashing out. Shane realised Nicky was experiencing delusional behaviour, as
his eyes flew open, wide staring eyes that darted around the room, finally
settling on Shane.
He placed a damp cloth on Nicky's forehead, he flinched, and sat up, glaring
at him "Stay back! Leave me alone!"
"Nic...It's me....Shane" He placed his hand on his shoulder
"Don't touch me" Nicky said in a whisper. He looked straight
through Shane
"Nicky, relax will you" Shane tried to calm him down, but he was
really
freaked out. He waved his hand before his eyes, but Nicky didn't blink. He
stared straight ahead, he was really scaring Shane, he stepped out of the way
and followed his gaze. He was burning a hole in the door.
Shane panicked, but he was alone. The rest of the lads were still busy with
the photo shoot. He quickly left the room and leant against the door, taking
big deep breaths. What have you taken Nic. He asked himself
"Hi honey" Shane jumped when he heard a voice. His breathing was
all over
the place "T...Tonya...Oh god!" He sobbed
"What's happened?" She asked calmly
"Nic..." He managed to say. She rushed into his room and
caught her breath.
I followed her in, worrying about Nicky
"No, you must wait outside" She pushed me out
"No! Nicky's in there, I want to see him!"
"Shane?" She pulled on his shirt to get his attention
"Shane, take her for
a drink"
He looked up, seeing the urgency in her eyes and nodded, even though he
didn't want to leave Nicky alone with her, something told him that she'd be
okay. Shane led me away and tried his best to answer my questions. I just
didn't understand
Tonya closed her eyes and an image flashed before her. No. She said silently.
I can't think about him. She shook her head, forcing the image to the back
of her mind, where it had remained dormant for so long
"Nicky?" She asked softly, not wanting to startle him. He lay
motionless,
his eyes frozen on the door. She sat down next to him on the bed, the look in
his eyes still made her uneasy. She placed her hand on his forehead, it was
cold and clammy. He didn't react badly, she could sense that any paranoia he
was experiencing was leaving him. She hated witnessing this, and would have
done anything to prevent seeing this again.
"Why am I going through this again?" She whispered. Knowing all
too well
that she had no choice, she knew Shane would crumble if he had to go through
this alone
Shane smiled weakly as he sipped his coffee. I could see terror written all
over his face. There was only one person who put it there
"Tell me what happened" I said
"No, you can't get involved"
"Dammit Shane! I am involved. He's my boyfriend, and you know
something!"
"You have to leave him" He whispered.
"I won't leave him. You're his best friend, you must know how important it
is
for me to be with him!"
"If you stay with him, you may as well just throw your life away!"
"What are you trying to say?"
He sighed "Nicky's on drugs"
Those three words hung in the air as I tried to grasp the realism of this.
"N..Nicky would never touch drugs, you're mistaken" My voice
shook with
emotion
"I was with him Caz. I'll never forget what I saw. Nicky is on drugs"
"No!" I yelled and ran out of the restaurant in floods of tears
Nily turned on the crocodile tears as the police investigated her break in.
They dusted for prints, took photographs and interviewed her
"Do you have any idea who could have done this?"
"Well, I pretty much keep to myself, although there is one person that
comes
to mind"
"Who?" The police officer took out a notepad
"My ex boyfriend. He never accepted that we were over. He scares me, I'm
just
so glad I was out when he was here"
"Has he done this kind of thing before?"
"He's never broke in, but he's harassed me plenty of times. I just never
told
anyone for fear that they wouldn't believe me"
"And why wouldn't they believe you?"
"My ex. I didn't tell you his name. It's Nicky. Nicky Byrne"
The officer raised an eyebrow. Nily sighed "From Westlife"
The officer immediately took interest, writing details down.
"Don't worry. We'll catch him, popstar or not, he can't harass innocent
young
girls" The officer said as she left
Nily grinned as she was once again alone. Pulling a floorboard up, she
retreived her stash. "You foolish boy Nicky. You'll regret messing with
me"
Nicky on drugs sounded impossible. I went over and over it in my mind. I
opened the door to his room. I tried to scream but nothing came out. Tonya
heard movement and turned to face me
"You shouldn't be here! Where's Shane?"
"I...What is he on?" I walked towards Nicky, taking his hand, I
squeezed it,
he just stared straight ahead "Nicky, talk to me" I sobbed
onto his hand
"He won't talk to you" Tonya offered
"I need him to know I'm here. What have you done to yourself?" I
took a
sharp intake of breath as his fingers brushed my hand.
"Nicky?" I squeezed his hand again
"Nily" He moaned softly
Panic rushed through me, hearing him speak his bit on the side's name. Tonya
stepped forwards "He's incoherent"
"No, that must be her" Tears streamed down my face. Nicky sat
up, realised
he wasn't alone
"What's going on?" He asked
"Nicky. What have you taken?" I asked. He pulled away from me
"Nothing.
I've taken nothing!"
Tonya recognised the signs. First paranoia, now denial. She knew his problem
would escalate if she didn't make him see sense, see that he could lose
everything.
Shane walked in the room, and breathed a sigh of relief when he noticed that
Nicky was sat up. "You okay mate?"
"I'm fine! Why is everyone here? Is a bit of space too much to ask
for?"
I stood up, not meeting his gaze. For I knew he'd shoot me one look, a look
of anger, maybe even a look of hate. I left the room without another word.
"Now I know" I said out loud
"Now you know what?" Mark asked, with Kian and Bryan right
behind him. Kian
and I exchanged looks
"You know?"
He sighed "I just know that he needs help, I don't know what is
wrong"
"What do you know?" Mark asked again, with urgency
"I can't..." I bit my lip to stop more tears from falling
"Guys" Mark jerked his head "Give us a minute will
you?"
Bryan and Kian left us alone, Mark took my hand "You can tell me
anything.
No matter what it is"
"Not this Mark. This is like my worst nightmare....Nicky he's"
"He's what?"
"On drugs" I sobbed. Mark was clueless as what to do, it hit him
like a
tonne of bricks.
"H...How do you? I mean, are you sure?" He gasped
I nodded "It's true Mark. I didn't want to believe it, but look into
his
eyes, you'll see that he is"
Tears that Mark never knew he had rolled down his face. I pulled him close,
needing the comfort as much as he did, I felt his body tense up, as he cried
on my shoulder.
