Chapter 2

"Are you up for it lads?"  Nicky grinned, which made Mark roll his eyes. He
was beat, the last thing he wanted was to go out and get drunk.
Bryan stood up "Sure, I'm game"
Mark looked at him in amazement, for the past week, he'd done nothing but
moan about how irresponsible Nicky is, and now here he was wanting to go out
and party with him
"You've changed your tune"  Mark mumbled
"I have to go Mark. If there was any other alternative I wouldn't go, believe
me!"
Nicky went to see if Shane and Kian wanted to join them. Mark was quick to
refuse.
"You have to go?"  Mark asked after Nicky left
"Yes, Caz asked me to keep an eye on him for her. I promised her"
"So, he's causing her to worry? I hate that"
"Do you know he was about to leave without even kissing her goodbye?"
Mark dipped his head  "I'd never do that"
Bryan looked at him mildly surprised, but made no comment, he knew how
embarrassed Mark gets

Shane picked up the phone and dialled my number, he had also refused Nicky's
invite, Kian however had wanted to get out, the hotel was stuffy, he needed a
drink to clear his head.
I picked up the phone on the second ring, hoping deep down it was Nicky, but
knowing that I was dreaming.
"Nicky?"  I asked eagerly
Shane sighed  "Sorry to disappoint you, it's me Shane"
"Oh"  The sadness in my tone of voice was piercing  "Shane, how are you?"
"I'm good, but I have to tell you something"
"What is it?"
"Nicky's going out tonight"
"Oh, well that's up to him, I won't stop him from enjoying himself"
Shane was silent for a few seconds  "Has he called you today?"
I twisted the telephone cable around my fingers  "What do you think?"
"He hasn't? God!"
"What is it Shane?"
"He promised me"  Shane let out a long winded sigh  "He told me he was going
to call you"
"Well, he never called me. He hasn't phoned me once since he left. Not once
Shane!"
"I'm so sorry, I'm gonna give him such a hard time when I see him!"
"No Shane! Please don't"  I pleaded with him
"Why? Is he or is he not hurting you?"
"He's not doing it on purpose, you can't upset him. He's your best friend
Shane"
"I know that, but you are also a good friend, and you don't deserve to be
messed around"
"Thanks Shane, but he's not messing me around, he loves me"
"Does he?"  He asked, and regretted it as soon as the words left his lips
I held the phone away and just stared at it. Was Shane saying that Nicky had
no feelings for me? It tore at my heart, which was already in pieces
"Thanks Shane, you really know what to say in a moment of crisis"
"Oh god, I didn't mean that"  Shane apologised
"I know that you did, and that hurts you know. It's one thing for me to doubt
my boyfriend's feelings, but you can also see it too"
"Look, I didn't mean it. Of course he loves you. Why wouldn't he?"
"Because I drive him away, that's the only reason I can think of"  I quickly
hung up, not wanting to hear anymore
Shane heard the click, and threw his phone on the bed. He felt as if he'd
screwed up, and it was all down to Nicky. His best friend, who everyone
adored, and yet he sucked at relationships.

"How many has he had?"  Mark asked Bryan as Nicky downed yet another shot of
Vodka. Bryan shook his head, he was glad Mark agreed to tag along, a drunk
Nicky was not what he could handle on his own.
Kian had left an hour ago, he couldn't put up with Nicky any longer
The alcohol played havoc with Nicky's co-ordination, as he swayed around the
club, falling on top of a group of girls, he made no effort to stand up, he
simply laid there, smiling away. The girls were impressed to have a member of
Westlife before them, they knew he was spoken for, but they could see he
didn't care about that, as he gave them the once over.
Mark was up on his feet in no time when he saw Nicky making a fool out of
himself, Bryan was right behind him, as they pulled Nicky to his feet, he
struggled, as he wanted to be back with the group of girls, he linked hands
with a tall brunette, and was reluctant to let go.
Bryan looked at him in disgust, he pulled Nicky away from the brunette, she
was willing to hold on tightly, but Bryan was stronger. Mark was fuming, he
helped Bryan drag Nicky back to the hotel

"What the hell were you playing at!"  Bryan screamed at Nicky once they were
back at the hotel
"Leave me alone"  Nicky mumbled as he buried his head under the duvet
"Oh no way Nic"  Mark pulled the duvet off Nicky  "Your behaviour was
apalling tonight!"
"So, I was having fun!"
"Did you forget that you have a girl at home waiting for you?"  Bryan asked
"No! How can I forget that! You never shut up about her!"
"I hope she dumps you, when she finds out what you got up to"  Mark said
Nicky sat up  "Yeah, I'm sure you'd love that!"
"What? I'd love for you to upset her more? As if Nicky. Do you have one
sensitive bone in your body?"
"I care"  Nicky answered glumly
"Sure you do, that's why you insist on hurting her at every chance you get"
"I do not hurt her!"
"What the hell is going on in here!"  Shane barged in
"Just trying to tell Nicky here a few home truths"  Mark said
Shane looked at Nicky and sighed  "Drunk again?"
"I needed to relax"
"Well maybe you can show some consideration to your girlfriend next time"
Shane said quietly, so as not to disturb anyone
"What?"  Nicky asked, somewhat annoyed
"You told me you'd call her. You promised me Nic"
"Big deal. So I didn't call her, she'll get over it"  He slumped back down on
the bed
Bryan knew it was the drink talking, Mark however was enraged, and couldn't
stay around Nicky.
Shane ran his hand across his tired and weary face   "This has to stop Bry"
He said as he heard Nicky snoring
"I know, he went too far tonight"
"Why has he changed so much Bry? He's not the Nicky I know anymore"

Mark returned to his room, trying to wipe out the day's events, he was
disgusted with Nicky, he'd changed so fast.
God. Why is he hurting you? He asked himself. I'd never hurt you. He picked
up a small photo that he kept in his wallet, and traced his fingers around it
"I love you"  He whispered, as a tear rolled down his cheek
