Chapter 26

So many words for the broken heart
It's hard to see in a crimson love
So hard to breath
Walk with me, and maybe
Night of lights so soon become
Wild and free I could feel the sun
Your every wish will be done
They tell me...

Kian and Emily were the first to arrive, rushing down the crowded hospital hallway. Bryan nervously paced near the Emergency Room, his head down and his arms behind his back.
"Bryan, where is he?" Kian asked holding Emily's hand.
"He is still in the Emergency room, they have been working on him since they brought him in an hour ago." Bryan suddenly felt a comforting arm around his waist; Alex came from behind him, smiling taking her place next to him.
"Alex, when..." Bryan said taking her in his arms. He had held his own while searching for Shane. He held his own when he saw them bring Shane in, people screaming medical jargon, and he held his own when he called Andrea to tell her the news. But to see Alex standing so close, her arms around him, her smile radiating to his heart. All he wanted to do was to tell her how much he loved her. He had seen a life be taken away before his eyes. Time was precious to him and Alex was more important to him then he realized. But not only was Alex important to him but now he knew what he felt to be loved back. Alex came without him calling her. She came because she wanted to be with Bryan, because she loved him. He held her close, stroking her hair, feeling her heartbeat on his chest.
"Sidney called me." She looked up at him; his face tired and tear stained. "I came as soon as I heard." Her heart ached for him, for what he must be feeling. She just stood in his arms, giving him the strength he needed.
"What happened?" Emily asked standing behind Kian. She gently caressed his back, being his strength.
"His car went over a cliff." Bryan softly said, Alex gasped in the thought.
"How long was he out there?" Kian asked taking Emily's hand and squeezing it.
"They found his car about Midnight last night. So he had been there at least almost 24 hours. It took them four hours to get down to him and to get him out.
"What is his status?" Kian asked. Emily slowly dropped his hand. Shane had been stranded in his car, hurt and scared while she and Kian made love. While she felt pure pleasure, Shane was in pure agony. Emily put her head down, afraid to look at anyone, feeling ashamed in her actions.
"He was dead on arrival when they brought him in." Bryan said remembering the screaming and frantic attempts to save Shane.

Life goes on as it never ends
Eyes of stone observe the trends
They never say forever gaze
Guilty roads to an endless love
There's no control
Are you with me now?
Your every wish will be done
They tell me...

"Where is he?" Mark said coming around the corner with Sidney on his heels. Bryan repeated the happenings again, each time becoming more real for him. Each time he told the story, he relived the pain. But each time he told the story, Alex stood strong next him, holding his hand, smiling and rubbing his back.
"We have to find out something. We can't just..." Sidney said stopping. Andrea slowly walked towards them, her hands on her face. The smell of the hospital made her sick to her stomach, the sounds of the nurses and Doctors rushing down the hallway made her heart sink farther. She was exhausted, torn apart and sick.
"Sidney." Andrea said approaching Sidney. "My God, what happened? When..." Sidney reached out to her, Andrea falling into her arms, crying. She had been alone since Shane left, angry. Andrea suddenly let the past two days come to the surface. Sidney sat down on the bench, Andrea crying, letting everything out.

Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with
Tell me why I can't be there where you are
There's something missing in my heart.

The Doctors worked quickly, inserting this, pumping that, charging here, pushing more external mechanical life in Shane. He had been clinically dead for twenty-five minutes, a bleep once-in-a-while for hope. The paddles failed several times, Shane's ribs were broken by the numerous Cardiac Thrust to his chest. He had the highest Epinephrine and Lidocaine dose in his veins. But even the central line in his heart was in vain.
"We have to call it." The Doctor said. "He is already brain dead." The nurses set the last dose of Epinephrine on the tray and stepped back from Shane. The Doctor set the paddles down and looked at the clock.
"Time of death..."

"Shane, you have to go back." Said the angelic voice.
"NO!" Shane said floating in the peaceful breeze around him.

There's nowhere to run
I have no place to go

"Yes, they need you." The voice got closer to Shane as a face began to take shape in the clouds. "They all need you." Shane looked at the face; the sobbing of Andrea was faintly heard.
"Michael, I want to stay here." Shane moved closer to his friend.

Surrender my heart, body and soul
How can it be you're asking me to feel
The things you never showed me.

"Shane. Mark and Kian need you. Andrea can't raise your child alone." Michael reached his hand out to Shane. "Don't let your daughter grow up without a father."
"My daughter?" Shane asked taking Michael's hand.
"Yes" Michael said smiling. " Don't let her grow up without you, Shane. It is so hard to watch Bailey grow up without me. Don't let her be like Bailey."
"Michael, why didn't you tell..."
"It's not important, Shane. You must become the leader now for your friends. They need you. You must make Mark follow up on his promise to me, Sidney needs him." Michael let go of Shane's hand.
"But I don't know..."

You are missing in my heart
Tell me why I can't be there where you are

"Kian will need you more then he knows." Michael began floating backwards. "You will be the best father, Shane."
"Michael!" Shane yelled.
"Take care of Andrea." Michael disappeared in the clouds. "Tell Sidney that I love her and I am proud of her."
"Michael." Shane said softly as he disappeared in the clouds.
"Michael!" Shane yelled, his body jumped on the table.

The machines sounded the alarm that life had returned.
"Holy Shit! He's back." The Doctor yelled. The medical professionals began working frantically, maintaining the life they had given up on.

Mark and Kian grabbed their chest; sweat pouring down their face. They looked at each other, in amazement. Sidney felt a tingle go through her soul, her hair stood up, her hands began shaking.

Show me the meaning of being lonely
Is this the feeling I need to walk with
Tell me why I can't be there where you are...

"He...Michael." Sidney paused, looking at Mark and Kian. "He went right through me. I...just felt him." She said tears streaming down her face.
"Shane...is...alive." Kian said softly.
"Yes...he is." Mark said taking Sidney in his arms.

There's something missing in my heart.
