Claire peeked anxiously
around the corner, not really prepared to see
Shane in a hospital bed. Especially since she indirectly put him
there. Other than his IV all the monitors were off but he still looked
way too pale for her liking. She lovingly stroked his cheek and kissed
his forehead,"Okay babyface, it's time to get up now. I know you love
a good nap but this is silly now". She was glad someone had given him
a shave, stubble didn't suit him. "Your mam and I are awfully
impatient to hear your beautiful voice sing to us again. Carlton
Clover doesn't appreciate our crooning either. C' mon Shane love, open
your eyes. You have to see how many people are here who love you and
miss seeing your smile. I don't deserve it but it would mean the world
for me to see it. I want to make you smile every day of your life if
you'll let me again." Claire was stroking his hand and his face the
whole time but there was no response. She didn't give up though and
chatted about much of nothing knowing he could hear. Eventually it
grew late and the doctors thought it was best she went to get rest,
but she refused to leave his side."I'm not leaving until Shane walks
out of this hospital with me. Please let me stay." They relented and
got her a cot which she didn't use, falling asleep with her head
against his bed and his hand in hers. Claire awoke with a start when
she felt Shane squeeze her hand back softly, "You're stubborn girl,
anyone one ever tell you that?" he said his voice rough from lack of
use. She would have screamed but it was the middle of the night and
she didn't want to cause any more trouble. Tears of joy streamed down
her face as she leapt up to kiss him, "All the time. Do you know how
happy I am to see you awake?", "I've got an idea. I'm glad you're
here, the Mouse could spare you?" he said with a lopsided grin.
If he could joke she felt confidiant he was feeling better. "I quit",
"You what?!", "When I called to tell them I had to come to
Ireland for
an emergency they asked what my priorities were. I'm looking at my
world right now. If they couldn't understand that it wasn't the right
place for me anymore. I'm where I want to be with the man I want to
spend my life with if he'll have me." In response Shane lifted the
covers of his bed and motioned for her to climb in, and she took him
into her arms. He looked up at her with those expressive, gorgeous
eyes she had been dying to see for days "I think we'll make it",
"I
think so, I really do" and they kissed tenderly. The nurses could wait
a couple of minutes longer, Claire wasn't giving this moment up for
anything.
