Chapter 1

1536

Tower of London

Lady Evelyn stared out the window of her room looking over the courtyard that once was her playground but now was her prison. As one of Queen Anne Boleyn's ladies in waiting she was well aware of her affairs and was found to be a traitor to the crown. Days became months as she waited for her sentence but there was no real question, she was going to be beheaded. She sighed deeply, she hoped it had all been worth it for her older confidante and friend, she had been loved. Love was something that ladies whispered about behind their fans and performers had sung songs about but it had eluded Eve. It seemed she was never to feel something that would ultimately be something she would die for.

She heard the door open as the guard brought in her food as he had every day, but what was the use of eating? "Please take it away, I've no use for it." she said not turning from the window.

"You really need to keep your strength up Milady. I urge you to have something."

She turned and sat down in front of the guard, he had been nothing but kind to her since her imprisonment started. He had sandy brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and clear blue eyes that usually sparkled with humour but were troubled today. "They have set the date for your execution, in two days."

Eve felt her heart drop, to know you were to die is one thing but to know when was brutal. Leaning forward her whispered, "I want to help you escape."

Eve's own aquamarine eyes widened in surprise. "You what? It's impossible. Why would you want to do that for me?"

He ran a hand through her long blond hair, not caring that he was a commoner and she was a lady. "Because you're an innocent. You don't deserve this fate. I can get you out, I stake my life on it."

She felt a tingle go through her at his touch, he didn't scare her like the other guards. There was a gentle nature about him but she still couldn't understand why he'd risk his life for her. "What would be your reward?" she asked breathlessly.

He licked his lips and stared directly into her eyes, "Your innocense. One night with me and I'll let you free to live your life. I could make you very happy."

She was shocked by his bluntness but what did she really have to lose? She stood up pacing the room, it was dangerous and foolhardy but if she was to die anyway.... one night would be worth her life. "Yes, I'll do it." she said before she could change her mind. "What's the plan?"

"I'll come for you tomorrow and all will be explained. Thank you for trusting in me." and before he lost his courage her kissed her. The heat between them just about seared her and she thought in an instant, "So this is what's worth dying for." With one last longing glance he said goodbye until tomorrow.
