Chapter 3

by Sherry

Even though she wasn't technically doing anything wrong Rachel snuck through the empty halls of Summerhill College like a woman on a mission. "I'm just here because I need a book from my locker, that's all," she said to herself as she moved closer to the auditorium. Just because Matt happened to be the stage manager and had to be at every Grease rehearsal made no matter to her. Yeah right, she should have auditioned for a part with Liz and Karen. Then she'd at least have a good reason to stare at Matt all she wanted. Peeking in the doorway she saw HIM working with the T-Birds on painting Greased Lightening and a bunch of girls practicing dance steps on stage. The stage lights caught the blond streaks in Matt's hair and it was all Rachel could do not to sigh for the millionth time how dreamy he was. "Lord, here we go again! Will you just do something about it already, ask him out." Melody said putting her well manicured hand on her friends' shoulder and gently pushing her inside the room. This caught the attention of the guys working on the car and they smiled in their direction. Rachel ducked her head and wished the floor would suck her up as Melody yelled out gaily, "Hallo lads!" and gave a homecoming queen wave.

They looked like they might come over but just then Mr. McEnvoy called out,"Alright kids, from the top. Steady on, don't drop our teen angel!" Just then a disco ball slowly started to spin and Mark was being lowered on a swing with clouds on the sides. It had to be the dumbest thing Rachel had ever seen.

"Yep, I am cool." Mark said to himself sarcastically as he came down."If this doesn't bring the ladies running I don't know what will." He could hear his mates chuckling loudly to the side but couldn't look at them or he'd lose it for sure. Only for the true love of theatre did he let himself look all deutzy.

All thoughts of Mark's goofy entrance were gone as soon as his mouth opened. Rachel couldn't believe how incredibly beautiful his voice was,"I didn't know he could sing like that!" she said as Melody put her head over Rach's shoulder.

"And that's just part of the whole package. He is so fine." Rachel turned and raised an eyebrow at her friend, the maneater had turned her Mark into her latest prey. Mark was really starting to get into the song, hamming it up. Glancing out into the auditorium he noticed the two girls watching and almost missed a dance step. Rachel was there and she was watching him! He really got into it then, he was going to impress her and the pretty blond with her as well. He started to walk forward but was so wrapped up in the vocal he went straight off the stage and into the pit with a crash. Matt and the other guys lost it and went over to pick him up. He just lay there too horrified to make eye contact with anyone. "I just want to die, right here."

"Smooth move there Feehily. Oh nice, you broke your wing," Shane said pulling him to his feet. "The ego is crushed too, eh Mark?" Matt said brushing imaginary dirt off of his mate. "Rachel must think I'm the biggest muffin," Mark said to himself.

"What a klutz!" Rachel said outloud but didn't really think he was honestly. As much as he deserved it for acting like a peacock strutting around on stage, she hoped he hadn't hurt himself. "You two really know how to make yourselves known, don't you?" Liz said as she and Karen came from the stage. "It's a gift," Melody said with a shrug of her shoulders. "I'm going to check the poor little fallen angel and make sure he isn't bruised," and she sashayed off towards the guys. "I bet she will." Karen said and the girls laughed. Rachel quietly steamed and she wasn't sure why. Melody was one of her best friends but to see her touch Mark's face and laugh over something he said made her blood boil.

After a couple of minutes she returned."Guess who owes me the biggest favor tonight?" and they all shrugged. "Not only do I have a date with Mark tonight but I talked Matt, Shane, and Kian into coming for you three. Isn't that great?"

"Just lovely." Rachel said, getting a feeling this wasn't going to be as wonderful as Melody imagined.
