| 'Liz? Say something please!' Maria screamed, cradling her best friend's head. Blood oozed from her stomach, staining her uniform a crimson red. The sight made her skin crawl and sent her mind into a flurry of panic. What had just taken place had been unexpected, least of all unnerving. The customers had been arguing, accusations about money flying between the two. Then one of them had reached into his coat, only to pull out a chrome gun. A frenzy had developed in the Crashdown, as everyone flung themselves onto the floor, wanting to avoid the gun fire. She looked to the side and saw one of the man drop the gun on the floor, the metallic thud adding to the screams and shouts for help. He was staring at his hands, the reality of what he had just done sinking in. He darted for the door, cursing himself for his won stupidity as he ran down the pavement towards a nearby white sedan. Maria looked down at Liz, tears streaming down her face. *Please don't die Liz . I need you!* She silently screamed to herself, willing her friend to hear her. One minute everything had seemed normal and then the guy had fired a shot, the bullet piercing through Liz's stomach. She had watched shocked as her best friend grasped her stomach, her mouth hungrily taking in huge gasps of air. Had it only been a minute? Was that all it had taken to turn her life completely around? The man had collapsed on the floor, and Maria thought she could hear sobs coming from behind the ski mask. 'Move aside Maria,' someone whispered to her, gently nudging her aside. Maria blinked. She swiveled her head to the side and saw Max, Max Evans. What was he doing? Trying to perform CPR? 'Please. Just trust me,' he said to her. Paralyzed with fear, Maria just nodded and moved aside, letting someone she barely knew place his hands over Liz's wound. What was he trying to do? 'Max, I don't think applying pressure to the wound is such a good .' Light glowed from beneath his hands and Maria saw his body rock back and forth. Petrified, she was about to pull him away when Liz's eyelids shot open. Her brown eyes were glazed over but were now on Max, who was holding his head, his eyes cringed in pain. What had he done? Liz blinked her eyes, not believing what had just happened. The pain...the searing pain she had felt a moment ago was gone. She felt her stomach for the hole. It was gone! She shook her head. The images she had seen were still fresh in her mind, lingering. There had been one of a young Max Evans and his sister, Isabel, spinning around in circles, their childish laughter ringing through the air. There had also been another of the both of them and someone else, all three holding hands and walking away from three giant test tubes, the insides glowing a bright green. There had been so many...ones that were hard to explain. But how had he healed her.mended her fatal wound without anything but his hands? Max stood up quickly, his head still throbbing with pain. He had just put the three of their lives in danger, his, Isabel's and Michael's. What had he been thinking? He had let an obsessive crush on Liz Parker get too far and now she would be curious...curious of how he had healed her wound. A flash of blond caught his eye. Her friend, Maria.she had witnessed it too and was now staring with him with huge blue-green eyes. The only word his mind could process was 'Run'. Quickly, he pushed open the door and with a backward glance, stumbled out of the Crashdown. 'You did what?' Michael Guerin yelled at his friend, who had stumbled in only a few moments ago. How could Max do this to them, to the three of them? He had let some stupid crush on a girl he barely knew cloud his usually rational mind. Beside him, Isabel Evans had not said a word since Max had told them about him healing that Parker girl. He could see she was terrified, terrified of what would now happen to them. Would they be closely scrutinized from now on or be somewhat safe as before? In fact, Michael himself did not know the answer to that. He was more than willingly to get his stuff and leave Roswell behind for good; it was something he had always dreamed about for the past seventeen years of his life. But he knew that wouldn't be an option, considering as how Max and Isabel both had made fairly good lives for themselves in Roswell, unlike himself. They both had a family, something Michael would never have, no matter how hard he tried. 'I healed her. She was dying Michael, what did you expect me to do? Just leave her there to bleed to death?' Max's calm voice broke Michael from his thoughts. 'It's great that you wanted to play hero and save her Max, but did you even think about what your actions might do to us? Or is it already filled with nothing but Liz Parker?' Michael shot back, anything but calm. 'Look, I know what I did was stupid-' 'Stupid? You Max? Never,' Michael said sarcastically. Max shot him a glare but continued, knowing full well he did not want to get into an argument with Michael at this point of time. 'It was stupid but I trust Liz and I know that she would never tell Valenti or anyone about what happened,' Max finished, hoping his point would come out loud and clear. 'What about her friend Max, what about her?' Isabel whispered so softly, Max could barely hear her. He glanced at his distraught sister and his heart squeezed with guilt. He had betrayed her trust and Michael's but when he had seen the bullet sink into Liz's stomach.he could actually feel the pain she was in. 'Yeah. What about her friend Max? Didn't she also witness your little act?' Michael asked, arms crossed against his chest. His brown eyes pierced Max with a glare so intense, he swore he was on fire. Max sighed in frustration. 'Yes, she did.' 'Don't you think she'll be curious of how you managed to make a bullet in Liz disappear?' Michael fired the question at him. Max gulped. He hadn't even thought of that possibility. 'Then...then I'll tell her the truth, the both of them,' Max answered, his voice slightly shaky. Michael stared at him, his eyes unblinking. Was Max so in love with this girl that he was willing to put their lives in danger by exposing their secret? Looking at his friend and the determined look in his eyes, he already knew the answer. 'Do what you want Maxwell, but don't come crying to me when you're placed on a dissecting table,' Michael said before climbing out of the window and disappearing into the night. Max watched him go and felt the weight on his shoulders grow heavier. He had let his best friend down. 'Izzy?' He asked his silent sister. She was the only one that could see both sides of an argument and come out with a compromise, a natural born diplomat. 'It's up to you Max but remember, you're not the only one in danger here,' she said to him before getting up and closing the door behind her. The sadness in Isabel's voice let the weight become heavier. He grabbed his Counting Crows CD and popped it into the stereo, letting the music soothe and calm him. For all he knew, tomorrow wasn't going to be pleasant. Liz stared at her uniform in amazement. There it was, bright as day. The bullet had actually gone into her stomach and she had actually bled. The blood had dried and now stained the area around the hole. She could only shake her head in wonder. Max Evans. That's who had done this to her. But why? She hardly knew him and they only talked during Chemistry, where they were lab partners. But when he had placed his hands over her stomach, she had felt such love seep into her. It was his love for her and it was unconditional. And those images she had received, they had all been images of her, with the exception of a few of Isabel and another boy, a boy with spiky hair. And then there was one that puzzled her. She had seen Max walk from a cylinder of some sort. But why would Max be walking away from such a thing? Shouldn't she have seen him being carried out of a hospital by someone? Somehow, science didn't seem to be helping her on this issue. When she had gotten up, she had only stared at the blood on her hands in shock, wondering if she was dead or alive. Maria had been right beside her, mascara forming black streaks down her pale cheeks. Suddenly, she had been engulfed in a massive bear hug from her best friend. She had heard Maria rambling on about but most of her speech had been incoherent. Maria had stopped talking and grabbed a nearby bottle of ketchup. Then, she had proceeded to drench where her wound had been in tomato sauce. Apparently, Maria had said that something had happened that she couldn't explain, something weird. Liz was told to say that she had fallen and the ketchup bottle had broken or something along those lines. And for the first time in her life, Liz had told a lie, a big one. To the Sheriff no less. After all the fuss over her and whether she was alright, Maria had dragged her to her room, leaving behind a very suspicious Sheriff Valenti. 'You stay here and rest Chica. I'll tell you everything tomorrow, I promise,' Maria had said before going home. Tomorrow seemed so far away . Liz sighed. Taking her journal from behind a loose brick, she sat on the recliner on her balcony and started to write down everything she was feeling and thinking. "My name is Liz Parker and something amazing just happened to me, so amazing that I have no words to describe it." |
