THE BEAUTY OF IT ALL

Beauty, it is said, is in the eye of the beholder. Music that might annoy one listener can inspire the soul of another. Its what we bring to the experience that counts.

God gave us sensessight, hearing, touch, smell, tasteto help us experience creation to its fullest. Once people look for and appreciate the beauty of life, they usually want to protect the beauty of some particular part of creation.

People are so drawn to human beauty that physical attractiveness affects the way we think about ourselves and others. Some scientists boil our preference for physical beauty down to survival. They say that deep in our psyches, men and women are simply striving to attract each other to propagate the human race. People have gone to extreme and even brutal measures to fit into these standards.

God asks us to love ourselvesbody, mind and soul. This means discovering and appreciating our God-given, unique beauty. "People are like stained glass windows," wrote psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. "They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is light within."    Christopher News Notes

The happiest people are rarely the richest, or the most beautiful, or even the most talented. Happy people do not depend on excitement and fun supplied by externals. They waste no time thinking other pastures are greener; they do not yearn for yesterday or tomorrow. They savour the moment, glad to be alive, enjoying their work, their families, the good things around them. They are adaptable; they can bend with the wind, adjust to the changes in their times, enjoy the contests of life, and feel themselves in harmony with the world. They have the capacity to love.     Jane Canfield
