Our activities and life itself get their
direction from the priorities we set for ourselves. If our priority
is to make money, we will opt for that which will fetch us maximum
profit. If our priority is name and fame, we will choose to boast of
our achievements in public to attract attention and admiration.
Society today gives priority to body building
over character formation, chooses to create a good and clean image than
cultivate strength of character, and opts for broadening of intellect
than enlarging of heart. This trend has resulted in degradation of
values and morality, deprivation of dignity of human life and
acceleration of materialism.
Character could be defined as the collective
mental, moral and social characteristics of a person. It exemplifies
human nature in its highest form. People of integrity, high principle
and values command respect, elicit inspiration and admiration. It is one
of the noblest and best possessions a person can ever have.
Formation of character cannot take place
without great effort. Every thought we think, every word we utter, and
action we perform contributes to the formation of our character. Hence,
think positive and elevating thoughts, speak words of affirmation and
appreciation, and perform actions that contribute to the growth of
oneself and others. Secondly, know that constant watchfulness, strict
self-discipline, self-control, right use of reason, and a compassionate
heart are basic requirements to form good character. Finally, everyone
should give priority to reaching the highest standard of character,
realizing that we might die and disappear from the face of the earth,
but the influence of our character survives us even after our death.
