MILESTONES 

IN THE LIFE OF MOTHER TERESA

 

1910, August 26: Agnes Bojaxhiu, daughter of Nicolas and Rosa, sister of Agata and Lazarus is born at Skoplje, Yugoslavia.

1928 September 26: Joins Loreto Convent in Ireland.

1931: Makes her first religious profession, taking the name Teresa.

1946, September 10: Journeys to Darjeeling. Receives inspiration to work among the poorest of the poor.

1950, October 7: Founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta.

1952, August 22: Inauguration of the Home for the Dying at Kalighat and of the Children�s Home.

1955: Opened Shishu Bhavan, to ease the plight of poor children.

1961: Honoured with the Padma Shri Award.

1962: Honoured with the Magasay Awad.

1971: Pope John XXIII Award. Good Samaritan Award and John F. Kennedy International Award.

1972: Nehru Award for International Awareness.

1979: Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She goes to Oslo to receive it.

1985: Gets Medal of Freedom, highest US Civilian Award.

1996, November: Receives honorary US Citizenship.

1997, March 13: Steps down as the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity. Sr Nirmala takes over.

1997, September 5: Dies in Calcutta.

1997, September 13: State Funeral of Mother Teresa.

2003, October 16: Blessed Mother
