EACH DAY OF
YOUR LIFE
Life is a precious
gift. That share in Gods own life is ours from the moment of our
conception until the moment of our natural death. There are times
when we ignore, even destroy, the gift of life: suicide, assisted
suicide, euthanasia, and abortion involve a blindness to the great
light of life kindled by God in the womb. When human beings stop
seeing life as a gift from God, they see it as something over which
they have authority and control. And then, they are in the gravest
danger, says Rev. J. Augustine DeNoia, OP. Although nothing should
diminish this gift, life has challenges:
Affirm Life:
In addition
to these life and death issues, we face other serious concerns
including those related to caregiving. Life-affirming answers are
needed. Instead of counting the years, we need to make the years
count with a faith-centred mindset, and actions that offer
gratitude for Gods great gift of life to each of us.
Make
Connections:
One-on-one
relationships can make all the difference. Bringing together old and
young can ease the loneliness of old age, while the young can profit
from the years of wisdom.
A lifetime membership:
Keeping physically active and mentally challenged can also help to
extend your life.
Plans for living and
dying: Many caregivers make an effort to plan ahead. While we are
helping others, we must deal with not only their loneliness and
pain, but with our own sense of mortality.
Spiritual
Security:
Focusing on the spiritual reminds us that life is Gods great gift
to us. And it helps us face our own death and the death of those we
love with the hope-filled eyes of faith.
