AROUND THE WORLD

SARS

SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) has now spread to 17 countries in four continents, leaving nearly 100 people dead, and more than 2500 infected. No one imagined that it would be a matter of days before the disease spread through different corners of the world. The disease is believed to have originated in Hong Kong or China, and has spread to distant continents through air travellers carrying the virus. Investigators are baffled at the erratic manner in which Sars has spread. With no adequate treatment, the infection’s rapid spread and high death rate has created panic among people.

First Test-fight to TB

Dr Ajit Lalvani, an Oxford Scientist who is originally from Delhi, has unveiled the world’s first diagnostic blood test for tuberculosis (TB) in London. The test is known as the Elispot test, which identifies people with early dormant TB before they become infectious to other people. It is believed that TB claims more lives than AIDS or malaria taken together. Roughly 900 million people worldwide are estimated to be infected today. The new blood test may become routinely available around the world in a few years.

Rare Jellyfish

Chinese scientists have claimed to have successfully bred a nearly extinct freshwater jellyfish in a laboratory. Known as the most primal invertebrate, the peachblossom jellyfish has lived on the planet for over 1.5 billion years and is now on the verge of extinction worldwide.
