STORIES THAT STIR

The Lord’s Way

Two boys in a boarding school were assigned similar menial duties, such as clearing tables, mopping floors, and so on. One of the boys was very unhappy with this type of work and would skim through his duties very unsatisfactorily and skip away to play. The other boy, observing this, would very unobtrusively put the finishing touches on his pal’s work, and he kept it up for quite some time. Ultimately it was brought to the attention of the faculty and they asked the diligent boy why he was finishing up the negligent boy’s work. Was it because he felt indebted to him in some way? "Now," said the boy, "you see, the Bible says that ‘whosever will be great among you, let him be your servant,’ and I want to be great, so I thought I would try the Lord’s way!"

Give the Best

On a slope of the Alps lived a little hunchback, himself an ardent admirer of the beauties about him, but unable to join the climbers. His daily business was to minister to those passing, in the little matters related to their long and arduous endeavour. But one day a famous mountain guide said to him, "How would you like to climb the mountain yourself?" The face of the poor misshapen man beamed, "I should like it very much," he said, "but, of course, I cannot do it." "Let’s try it," said the guide; and on the summit the grateful man kneeled down to pour out his soul in gratitude. He did his best; his leader did the rest.
