Christmas
recalls to our minds the coming of Jesus into this world. Though Jesus
was divine, he emptied himself and became a human being in order to
liberate us from the slavery of sin. By dying on the cross for our sins,
Jesus fulfilled his mission. Christmas also reminds us of the Peace, Joy
and Love which Jesus offers to humanity.
We experience a kind of peace
when we mind our own business and do not involve ourselves in the
struggles and difficulties of people. But the peace which Jesus offers
is the result of his active and loving involvement in the world. It is a
peace that can come from the satisfaction that our lives were useful in
bringing harmony in the world.
Though we were in sin, God did
not abandon us. Rather, he gave us a new life by sending Jesus in our
midst. What can give us more joy than a new life in the Spirit? What can
give us more joy than the promise of new hope? And what can give us more
joy than the awareness that God is still with us?
Jesus does not give us his
Love, rather he gives himself to us. And he IS Love. Jesus showed us
that there is no greater love than laying down ones life for our loved
ones.
Christmas invites us to be
messengers of Peace, Joy and Love. The law of proportionate return says
that the amount you give will be the amount you get back. Hence, by
being messengers of Peace, Joy and Love, we shall be filled with the
same. While failure to love results in unhappiness, a gift of ourselves
in love to others makes us happy and fulfilled.
