DISTRICT PATHOLOGY LAB
WASHINGTON, D.C.
4:05 AM

The remains of Billy Miles are brought to the pathologist in a metal box for "confirmation of death." The doctor takes one look at the pile of raw meat and sighs - the guy's dead, all right. But then he notices a small piece of metal in the crushed bits of flesh. It looks like a vertebra. He places it on the exam table, telling the lab tech to log it, and they leave for the night. But after they're gone, the piece of metal begins to spin, and every time it does, it multiplies, and a metal spinal column begins to form.

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE

In the car, Scully awakens as she and Reyes cross into Georgia. Reyes is worried that the place they're going doesn't have much in the way of facilities for a birth - she's never delivered a baby. Scully replies that she's never had one, so they're both beginners.

In Skinner's office with Doggett, Mulder shows Skinner a video grab of Billy Miles walking out of the D.C. morgue. Skinner is disbelieving that Miles could still be alive, but from the corner Krycek says, "You can't stop him." Krycek explains that Billy Miles is a new kind of alien - "created to aid in the repopulation of the planet." He tells them that there are others like Billy Miles out there, and it's only a matter of time before they find Scully.

Agent Crane pulls Doggett out of the meeting to tell him that he has an urgent visitor. It's Doggett's mystery contact, Noel Rohr.

Scully and Reyes arrive at Democrat Hot Springs, a deserted resort. They set up in an abandoned chapel, where Reyes has felt certain "energies." The building is run down and cobwebby, and there's no running water. It will take some work to make it ready for the delivery of Scully's baby. Reyes goes outside for a cigarette, and sees a bright white light in the sky through the trees.

In Doggett'ss office, Rohr tells Doggett that Billy Miles is a prototype of a super soldier created by a secret military project. Miles is hunting Scully because she's part of the project, too - the chip implanted in the back of her neck was used to make her pregnant with the first organic version of the super soldier. Rohr tries to find out where Scully is so he can "help protect her from Billy Miles." When Doggett says he doesn't know, Rohr warns that whoever knows where she is is in danger.

Mulder is waiting at the elevator. Impatient, he goes down the stairs instead. Just after he leaves, the elevator door opens and Billy Miles steps out.

Krycek gets up and leaves Skinner's office, despite Skinner's bellowing at him to sit down. Just as the door closes behind Krycek, Billy Miles enters Skinner's office. Skinner runs out after Krycek, who is already getting on the elevator, ignoring Skinner's shouts to hold the door. Skinner manages to reach the elevator in time to pull the door open and get in before Billy Miles catches him. For a moment they think they're safe - but then Billy Miles's fist punches through the elevator door and hits Skinner in the forehead. Skinner sinks to the floor unconscious, while Krycek watches in horror as Billy Miles's arm shreds the elevator door as the car goes down.

Mulder is with Skinner, who's been hospitalized with a head wound. Doggett calls Mulder out into the hallway, where he tells him about his meeting wtih Rohr. Mulder wants to know whether Rohr can be trusted. Doggett says Rohr's an old friend, but doesn't seem completely sure of him. Mulder suggests they go find out how trustworthy Rohr is.

Scully enters the chapel, amazed at how Reyes has cleaned it up. There's now a bed for Scully, with supplies for the delivery. Reyes says all they need now is music, and begins to imitate whale calls. She reminds Scully of her sister, Melissa.

Reyes notices someone outside, and goes out to check, unholstering her gun. She walks out into the middle of the road, making a perfect target of herself. A truck speeds around the corner and heads directly for Reyes, who holds her ground, gun pointed at the driver. The truck stops just in front of Reyes, and a woman Ranger steps out with her hands up. She tells Reyes to put the gun down and show her some ID, and Reyes complies. She brings the Ranger into the chapel, where Scully steps out holding her FBI badge, saying, "I'm sure this looks untoward." She explains that she's in danger from a man who wants to kill her and her baby. The Ranger is doubtful that this is a good place to hide out, but says she'll bring a first aid kit and other supplies to help with the delivery.

FBI PARKING GARAGE
2:56 AM

Mulder and Doggett return after fruitlessly trying to get in touch with Rohr. Doggett wonders how long Mulder will continue with his quest for the truth. Where is it all going to end? Mulder says maybe it doesn't.

They see Krycek drive into the garage and park. Doggett recognizes his passenger as Noel Rohr!

Back at the chapel, Reyes is boiling water while Scully rests. Reyes is concerned - something feels "off." She goes out to get more water from the pump, noticing that the bright white light is still in the sky. Suddenly, Billy Miles appears and grabs Reyes, throwng her against the side of a building. Reyes picks up a pitch fork and prepares to defend herself, but before Miles can attack her again, he is hit by a shotgun blast - the Ranger comes to the rescue. Scully comes outside as Reyes and the Ranger are dragging Billy Miles's body into the road. They see the protruding vertabrae in the back of Miles's neck. Scully isn't sure that she's out of danger, despite the appearance of Billy Miles's death. But before they can do anything, Scully feels a contraction - the baby is about to be born!

In the parking garage, Doggett and Mulder see Rohr get out of Krycek's car and go into the FBI building. "Where's he going?" Doggett wants to know. "Not to see you," Mulder answers. Doggett follows Rohr while Mulder stays to watch Krycek.

On the fourth floor, Doggett sees Rohr meet with Agent Crane. Doggett goes into Skinner's office to call Mulder, and finds Skinner there. They call Mulder and report Rohr's meeting with Crane. Mulder says Rohr, Crane, and Krycek are all working together.

Then the car window is smashed in, and Mulder's cell phone is grabbed out of his hand. Krycek crushes Mulder's phone under his shoe, and orders Mulder out of the car at gunpoint.

Krycek regrets it, but he has to kill Mulder now. "You think I'm bad, I'm a killer. We wanted the same thing, brother. That's what you don't understand.... I tried to stop them.... It's too late. The tragedy is that you wouldn't let it go. That's why I have to do this." Mulder's not impressed. "You want to kill me, Alex - kill me. Like you killed my father. Just don't insult me trying to make me understand."

Krycek's finger tightens on the trigger, but he hesitates, not wanting to do it. A shot is fired - and Krycek drops the gun, his arm bleeding. Skinner approaches with a gun. Krycek reaches for his gun with his wounded arm. Skinner shoots him in the arm again. His good arm incapacitated, Krycek makes one futile attempt to get his gun with his prosthetic hand, then gives up. He tells Skinner, "It's going to take more bullets than you can ever fire to win this game. But one bullet can give you a thousand lives. Shoot Mulder." Skinner kills Krycek.

Mulder gets back into his car, telling Skinner that he's going to find Scully. Skinner goes back to the FBI building.

Scully is in labor. The Ranger notes that her contractions are fifteen minutes apart. As the Ranger bends to attend Scully, Reyes sees the protrusions on the back of her neck - just like Billy Miles!

Doggett sees Crane and Rohr coming out of the elevator. He draws his gun and tells them to stop, but they come after him. Doggett turns and runs. Rohr chases Doggett down the stairs while Crane goes for the elevator. Doggett finds Skinner on the ground floor and they run for the elevator to the parking garage.

Reyes is boiling water. Suddenly, she throws a bucket of boiling water onto the Ranger and grabs the shotgun, ordering the Ranger outside. "Who are you?" Reyes shouts at the Ranger. Just then, cars begin to pull up outside the chapel by the dozens. The Ranger raises her head, no longer pretending to be an ordinary human. "This baby will be born," she says. Billy Miles gets up from where he has lain, supposedly dead.

Doggett and Skinner run to Skinner's car, with Rohr and Crane in pursuit. They begin to drive away, hitting Crane, who clings to the car unharmed. Crane smashes in the passenger side window, and begins to fight with Doggett.

Reyes returns to Scully, who asks what's happening - then sees the crowd of people, led by Billy Miles, entering the chapel.

Doggett and Crane fight while Skinner drives. Behind them, Rohr pursues in another car.

Scully screams, "It's my baby! Please don't let them take it!" The strangers gather around, staring silently.

Skinner wheels into a barrier, scraping Crane off the side of the car. Rohr, driving behind, runs over Crane, then crashes into a barrier, and his car explodes in flames. Doggett and Skinner drive away.

Scully is still in labor, still screaming, "Don't let them take it!" while Reyes tells her to push. At last, the baby is born. Outside, a helicopter approaches. It lands as the cars are leaving. Mulder gets out, calling for Scully. Reyes takes him to her.

Kersh is in his office, reading Doggett's report on the events. He is not pleased. He is especially not pleased to see that Reyes has also signed off on the report. Dogget is unconcerned by Kersh's bluster. He tells Kersh that he's under investigation for meeting with Rohr and Crane. "You'll investigate what I tell you to!" Kersh insists. "You told me to investigate the X-Files," Doggett says. He and Reyes leave.

Mulder enters Scully's apartment to find the Lone Gunmen gathered around her bed, bearing gifts. They wonder how Mulder managed to find her and save her. He tells them he followed the light. They leave, and Mulder holds the baby. She's calling the baby William, after Mulder's father (apparently forgetting that her own father's name is William). Mulder tells her that the baby has her coloring, her eyes - "But he looks suspiciously like Assistant Director Skinner."

Scully doesn't understand why "they" didn't take him. She still doesn't know how it happened. Mulder doesn't understand either. They kiss.
