| David Yates - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Once again, the multimillion dollar Harry Potter movie industry changes directors, this time making a rather odd and obscure choice. Headed by such directors as Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuarn, and Mike Newell, the producers of Harry Potter have now handed over the franchise to director David Yates. This new director is set to wrap up post-production on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for the summer 2007 blockbuster season, and this leaves many wondering if he will be able to deliver. In such a franchise as Harry Potter which is loved by kids the world over, David Yates is an obscure director to choose to head one of these movies. Before directing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Yates has directed such under the radar movies as The Tichborne Claimant (1998) and Rank (2002). Primarily though, Yates has worked mostly for television, directing such shows as The Way We Live Now (2001) and The Sins (2000). So far, his work has been that of drama and romance, not the type of movies and shows the target audience for Harry Potter is known for watching. All said and done, David Yates has only worked on sixteen different name projects. Most of these, if not all, are obscure and unknown to the average movie-goer and television watcher, not to mention the average Harry Potter fanatic. Such an obscure history makes it difficult to project how Yates version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will turn out. One thing is sure, though, and it is that Yates is out of his element in this movie. After a lifetime of dramatic and sometimes romantic films, shorts, and television episodes, he is now asked to direct one of the biggest kids movies of our time. There is a chance that he may be successful, but the producers have shown the limited faith they have in Yates when they again changed the director for the next movie in the series. Harry Potter fans can look forward to Yates Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in theaters July 13th, 2007. The next movie in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will release in 2008, directed by Anand Tucker. -Insigzilla |
