Green tunic… check. Sword… check. Shield… check. Awesome 3d graphics in a fully rendered world… wait a minute! What happened to the awesome 3d graphics like the previous N64 releases? That’s right people, say good bye to the awesome graphics and hello the cell shading. Cell shading provides a 3d look in a 2d world. I must say that even though the graphics were disappointing in the beginning… this game really portrayed what the Legend of Zelda is all about… kicking some serious butt! You take on the role as the hero… and it is not Link. You are a child growing up in your local village and it is your birthday. In celebration of your coming of age, you are to wear the tunic much like Link wore. You see, the events which took place in Ocarina of Time have long passed and become legend. After your sister is kidnapped by a large bird, it becomes your quest to rescue her.
The game play is still as good as the N64 versions. You have items which help you along your quest. Including, um I dunno… A BOAT! That’s right you have a boat which allows you to freely explore regions of the seas with the aid of the wind. This becomes part of the game as you have to learn how to control the wind using your wand. You learn sequences to use to control things such as night and day and the direction of the wind. It actually becomes a simple task as the game goes by. The interaction with the characters is nice. Although sometimes an occasional nuisance strolls up to you striking a conversation when you really don’t feel like it.
What would a Zelda game be like without side quests? Exchange items with characters to work toward the big prize. Speaking of prizes, there are treasures that you can pick up using the grappling hook inside your boat. Sometimes you get treasure maps, other tips you will find a glowing circle in the middle of the night skies. When you enter a new segment of the high seas, it is a good idea to get the help of a local fish that swims around. The bad part though is that you need bait to lure them near your boat so they can mark the nearby landmarks on your map.
The dungeons in this game are just as typical as the rest, but that doesn’t stop the action of this game. Even though there are a lot of variables in this game that we are used to from previous titles, the differences are just enough to make this game a title worth playing. Even with the disappointment in the graphics, Wind Waker takes Zelda to new heights. We can almost guarantee another Zelda title in the future and I can say that I am looking forward to it.
