From the moment you rev up, till you cross the finish line, Need For Speed Underground is laced with awesome graphics, smooth game play, and customization. With sleek shiny streets, obstacles, and oncoming traffic, it is hard to keep your eyes on your car. This game is stunning and hard to let go of. With single races, Underground mode, and online play, NFSU is a game that you can pick up for any period of time.

In the game’s Underground mode, you take on the role of a bystander eager to get into the street racing circuit. You start off with your choice from handful of cars, though sadly, your car is stocked out and there are no custom upgrades available yet. As you move on through the circuit, you begin unlocking style and performance upgrades. You also unlock tracks, cars, and unique upgrades for your car. It is hard to become disinterested in this game due to the differentiation of the styles of races. Circuit, Drag, Drift, Lap Knockouts, and Time Trials make up the series of races in which you take part in. You can also choose the amount of money you win each race by selecting the difficulty level. The amount of money you receive goes towards the style and performance upgrades.

As you take on races, you unlock performance upgrades for your vehicle. Brakes, engines, exhaust, tires, and yes even nitrous oxide! The higher your cars performance is, the better is handles. However, the sad thing is that your opponents performance depends on the performance of your own car. That’s right, you can have a sucky car in the last race of the game and the cars will be up to par with your own. Want to have the hottest car on the street? Then unlock visual upgrades such as rims, spoilers, paint, and exhaust tips. The more visual upgrades you have, the higher your style modifier is. Style modifier? That’s right, NFSU has a style modifier. On a base of 1-5 stars, the style of your car can determine the basis on how many points you receive per race. With a modifier of 1 your points are singled out. If you have a multiplier of 3, your points are tripled. The amount of points you earn, open vinyls and decals.

When you have mastered the single player mode, put your skills to the test against a friend or through the games online play. EA Online provides a great server for players to match up on. You can race the street, drag, and drift just like in single player action. You can work on ranking up online to truly show how much of a guru you are to this game. Due to the graphics and nature of the game, only broadband connections can experience online game play. This is a let down for dial up users who want to experience the world of online game play.

With the fast paced, eye pleasing game play, NFSU is a game that is hard to put down. Facing off against the computer or friends is no matter to this game, because face it… NFSU Rocks! I would love to give this game a perfect score, but that would mean that there is no room for improvement, but with NFSU2 due to release in the near future, surely there going to be improvements made on this game. The only thing I found bad about this game was the fact that you practically learn the city within the first 20 races. A little more variety in the courses could be improved on. Other than that, I really enjoyed playing and reviewing this game.
