Interview with Dave Fenichel
E-Wrestling Mark: 'Lo there, Dave. Can I call you Dave?
Dave Fenichel: lol. Yeah, Dave is fine. How's it going?
E-Wrestling Mark: It's going. :-) How about you?
E-Wrestling Mark: Enjoying summer?
Dave Fenichel: it's alright, I'd rather be back at school, but I'm managing to keep myself busy.
E-Wrestling Mark: You crazy then. I'm enjoying my doing-nothing-and-just-sitting-in-bed summer. It
was a wild semester for me.
Dave Fenichel: eh, to each his own
E-Wrestling Mark: True. So, lets get this interview going.
Dave Fenichel: alright, sounds good
E-Wrestling Mark: I'm running Inside E-Wrestling as you know now, and well we cover many federations from out of the 'circle' you have been in for a while. There are new names/wrestlers reading the page. So could you go over your background briefly, for them to know you?
E-Wrestling Mark: background in e-wrestling, I mean.
Dave Fenichel: As just about everyone knows, I handle TBL. I think I've been around this place as long as anyone, and it's been a lot of fun. I've been in feds like the ACF, EWA, UWF, WWEF, and others. I've also took a shot at running my own fed a while back, FCA. It didn't work out all that well, but it was fun nevertheless. I organized and ran a successful tournament called the Battlebowl Invitational Tournament, and now, I'm trying my hand at running another fed,
HIW.
E-Wrestling Mark: Why didn't FCA work out?
Dave Fenichel: FCA was a revolutionary fed for it's time. It brought together the wrestlers from the ACF and the wrestlers from the EWA, and basically created the "circle" you see before you. It ran great for the first 2 months or so, but in the end, my inexperience in running e-feds caught up to me, and I found that I no longer had the time or the dedication to put out a great product.
E-Wrestling Mark: I see...
E-Wrestling Mark: so then, what's so different about HIW? How do we, the fans, know HIW won't suffer the same fate FCA did?
Dave Fenichel: Well, for one thing, I feel that I have a greater knowledge of what it takes to run a successful e-fed. Secondly, I'm taking a much different approach to HIW. In the FCA, I pretty much controlled everything. In HIW, I plan on giving the wrestlers a lot more reign as far as what directions their characters will go in. Also, the fact that I have a great working relationship with everyone that is in the fed can only help me and
HIW.
E-Wrestling Mark: Well, that certainly sounds like the perfect federation. However, we haven't seen much activity as of late...is it all being saved for the first card?
Dave Fenichel: Unfortunately no. A lot has been planned for the first card, but the majority of it hinged on people actually roleplaying. It seems that with only 6 hours left until the roleplay deadline, and only 2 roleplays on the board, I might not have the most dedicated roster. Regardless, I'm going to proceed as planned, and if it doesn't work out, I will build HIW around the guys that are dedicated, and do my best to bring in new, dedicated wrestlers.
E-Wrestling Mark: Around the guys that are dedicated. Would you mind telling me what makes a 'dedicated' worker in your eyes?
Dave Fenichel: Anyone who "wants" to be in the fed. People can talk a good game, or have a great past rep, but if they aren't going to be active and committed to HIW every single week, they are useless to me. I really thought that I had put together a committed roster, but unless something changes within the next 6 hours, I will be proven wrong.
E-Wrestling Mark: Has there been any confrontation between you and your 'employees' in order for them to bail on you like this?
Dave Fenichel: Nope. None at all. In fact, the majority of them have told me that they have already started their roleplays, so basically come midnight tonight, it will be put up or shut up for them.
E-Wrestling Mark: I see. Everyone knows you have had problems in the past...Have you had any problems in the past with any of them?
Dave Fenichel: Well, I think I've had problems with everyone in the past:-) In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find 2 guys in this circle that haven't had problems with each other, even if they were just minor disagreeances. Face it, this circle is based on conflict, without conflict, there would be nothing of interest.
E-Wrestling Mark: I may be going out of subject here, but do you think a conflict-less circle wouldn't be able to stay alive for too long?
Dave Fenichel: it could stay alive, but I think it would be pretty boring. There would be nothing to talk about
Dave Fenichel: lol
E-Wrestling Mark: Talk about where? In chats and personal conversations among handlers?
Dave Fenichel: Yea, basically. The essence of this circle has never been the actual feds, it's been the
conversations and happenings out of character.
E-Wrestling Mark: Don't you think this could affect in any way, shape or form the outcome of the efeds? I mean, if the essence has been about the out of character aspect of this all, doesn't that create preferences among handlers and fed owners?
Dave Fenichel: It does. But in a way, it should. As a president, it's only natural to want to surround yourself with people that you get along with, and that you can work well together with.
E-Wrestling Mark: That creates cliques among the e-wrestling community, doesn't it? Presidents can actually hold someone down because of pure dislike.
E-Wrestling Mark: Tell me if I am wrong.
Dave Fenichel: You're not wrong at all, but think about it this way. Why would a president want someone who they completely dislike in their fed, and why would a wrestler want to wrestle in a fed where they hate the president's guts? Tom Stone hated plenty of people, and none of those people every got a push. Same with Kirk George, it's a fact of life in e-feds.
E-Wrestling Mark: Do you agree with it?
Dave Fenichel: I don't agree or disagree with it. I think it's just the way things are.
E-Wrestling Mark: Will that happen in HIW?
Dave Fenichel: I've intentionally surrounded myself with wrestlers that I get along with, there isn't anyone in HIW that I don't like.
E-Wrestling Mark: Will you not give a contract to a person you dislike?
Dave Fenichel: if I feel that I can look past my dislike for them and vice versa, then yeah.
E-Wrestling Mark: What if you feel you can't? No contract then?
Dave Fenichel: yeah. I am a fair man, there's no point in bringing someone into HIW if I'm not going to give them a fair shake, you know?
E-Wrestling Mark: Now, I want to change subjects drastically, and go back to your background for a second. You once made a sudden move, and claimed to have left the circle. What was that all about?
Dave Fenichel: I take it that you're talking about the Ethan Tyler/TBL incident in the EWA?
E-Wrestling Mark: To be honest, I did not follow this circle. However, I do remember reading a page once where you left suddenly.
E-Wrestling Mark: Some people reading our page may not know what this was all about, and I want them to know the real Dave Fenichel and his work.
Dave Fenichel: Let me give a brief synapsis then.
E-Wrestling Mark: Please do.
Dave Fenichel: I have quite the big mouth, and I said some things I probably shouldn't have said. For that, I was wrong. However, because of this, Timmy Aaron Jr and Tom Stone plotted against me. They used my character without my knowing, and basically had Ethan Tyler destroy him. It came out of nowhere, especially considering that I was technically an EWA staff member, and wrote 6 matches for that very same Pay Per View.
E-Wrestling Mark: Did you feel screwed, or do you think you deserved it?
Dave Fenichel: I pretty much wigged out, and left the circle in disgust. I came back several months later, and nowadays, the incident is irrelevent. I am on good terms with Timmy Aaron and everyone else involved.
Dave Fenichel: To answer your question, I think it's a dead issue. Whether I was screwed or not is irrelevent, because it's a thing of the past
E-Wrestling Mark: Now that we're done with the past, what is on your mind for the future? We all know HIW is a priority, but what if it were to fail?
E-Wrestling Mark: What then for Dave Fenichel?
Dave Fenichel: I don't plan on it failing. I will do anything it takes to make HIW the next elite federation, following in the footsteps of the ACF and the EWA.
E-Wrestling Mark: You seem very determined about HIW. What drives...what motivates you to run HIW? Is it our of pure pleasure?
Dave Fenichel: There's absolutely no pleasure in it, my motivation is my will to succeed. I don't do anything half assed, and I don't ever plan on being second best. Ever since I've decided that I was going to open HIW, my goals haven't been a successful fed for a few months before dying off like all the others, it's been to create the next dynasty, a fed of which will be remembered right along the ACF and EWA as being legendary. You see, the ACF and the EWA came about during different times. They came about when so many more people were eager to be involved in feds, and egos were much less of a factor. People say that a dynasty cannot be built under the current conditions, and I am here to prove them wrong, and prove them wrong I will.
E-Wrestling Mark: So far, your job has been great, but the response hasn't been the best. When do you expect things to pick up?
Dave Fenichel: Hopefully tonight within the next 5 hours...lol. If it doesn't, a completely new gameplan will have to be devised.
E-Wrestling Mark: Do you think HIW will top any of your most memorable moments in the e-wrestling industry?
E-Wrestling Mark: Being a president, instead of a wrestler?
Dave Fenichel: I hope so. Anyone can climb to the top, become world champion, and be recognized as being great, but tell me this: How many people can say that they created a dynasty?
E-Wrestling Mark: So up until now...what has been your most memorable moment? Or moments, as you see fit.
Dave Fenichel: as a wrestler....winning the ACF world championship. It was my first major world title, and as you know, it went on to become quite possibly the best fed of all time
Dave Fenichel: Another moment would have to be debuting in the EWA, and royally fucking up Serial Thrylla, Clayton Chandler, and Nomad after their "Hell on Earth" match. No one knew about it, and no one saw it coming. I remember the reaction after the Pay Per View card was posted, and I live for that kind of thing.
E-Wrestling Mark: What about worst moment/s?
Dave Fenichel: June 24th, 1999: The day the ACF died. I remember going to the site, and reading the message, only to be in a state of total shock. I knew that from that day forward, this circle would never be the same.
E-Wrestling Mark: Do you think your 'circle' is dying?
Dave Fenichel: Ask me that in a few months after HIW is off and running;-)
Dave Fenichel: Actually though, I can say this. From the e-fed side of things, it has slowed up considerably. The fact is, we have grown up together, and the majority of us are at the point in our lives where we have a lot of obligations, and plenty to keep us occupied. However, as far as the out of character aspect goes, this circle will never die. We have made friends for life through e-wrestling, and as long as those friendships stay strong, the circle will as well.
E-Wrestling Mark: That actually sounds...cute.
E-Wrestling Mark: *L*
Dave Fenichel: *smack*
E-Wrestling Mark: Well, Dave. Last but not least, Word Association.
Dave Fenichel: there's a shocker
E-Wrestling Mark: However, I want to add a bit more to it than just question/answer
E-Wrestling Mark: I know!
Dave Fenichel: hit me with it
E-Wrestling Mark: Interviews never do that.
Dave Fenichel: i'm up for anything, I've got nothing to hide
E-Wrestling Mark: What I thought was, if it's a person I mention, you tell a memorable moment or a message directed to him.
Dave Fenichel: alright, fair enough
E-Wrestling Mark: If it's a federation, your favorite match from that federation.
Dave Fenichel: fair enough
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright.
E-Wrestling Mark: Tom Stone.
Dave Fenichel: Absolute bastard, but the more and more time that passed, the more I have come to respect him. He was a hardass, and made some terrible decisions, but at least he had the balls to stand by them, and the dedication to keep the EWA up and running for 3 long years.
E-Wrestling Mark: Hoke Smart.
Dave Fenichel: A sad, sad, man. I hate to say this, but he has absolutely no redeemable qualities. The man is miserable, has serious problems, and needs counseling. On a professional level, he has tremendous roleplaying talent, but he is one of if not THE worst person to try to work with, both as a wrestler and as a president. Hoke Smart gets no love from me.
E-Wrestling Mark: Brian McDougall, A.K.A. Howell.
Dave Fenichel: He's one of those guys that I haven't really talked to all that much. I mean, we've had some conversations, but for the most part haven't really dealt with each other. He seems like an alright guy, but I'm probably not the best person to ask about him.
E-Wrestling Mark: Why not?
Dave Fenichel: Well, I really don't know much about him, so I can't really comment on him.
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright.
Dave Fenichel: No offense to him, but I never really considered him a major player in this circle
E-Wrestling Mark: Alex Garner.
E-Wrestling Mark: A.K.A. Lorenzo Hayes.
Dave Fenichel: Alex is a good guy. I enjoyed working with him in the UWF, and I would GLADLY take him in any fed of mine. He's great with angles, and getting better with his roleplaying. I still don't believe he's boning that hot bitch he showed us in the picture, but regardless of whether that's his girlfriend or his distant cousin, he seems like a quality guy.
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright. Chris Graham A.K.A. Gigante.
Dave Fenichel: Nice kid, but way too gullible. He once believed that Matt Lee and I started e-wrestling..*L*. Anyway, he's not the most talented e-wrestler in the world, but he's really likeable, and works hard.
E-Wrestling Mark: By now, you most probably know where I am heading. EIWA.
Dave Fenichel: I think that fed has what it takes to make it. The owners are inexperienced, but they are dedicated and hard working, and it appears that they have a nice, active roster. I just hope that they don't get frusterated by any problems they come across.
E-Wrestling Mark: While we're at it, "The Cornerstone" Dino Delsante.
Dave Fenichel: You know, I used to sympathize with him. He didn't get a fair shake in EWA, and though he got a decent push, really didn't get a fair shake in UWF either. However after talking to him, I quickly learned that he isn't the best people's person in the world, and really wasn't really deserving of anything better than what he was getting.
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright. Ox.
Dave Fenichel: Josh Hamric. I used to think this guy was a fool, and I was right...hehe. I like the guy though, he's a very good roleplayer, and he is dedicated to HIW. Besides, anyone who is willing to do another guy up the ass for 5000 dollars has to get some props right?
E-Wrestling Mark: (ponders)
E-Wrestling Mark: Serial Thrylla.
Dave Fenichel: An arrogant obnoxious prick. He's also by far my best friend in e-wrestling, go figure.
E-Wrestling Mark: Another cute answer by Fenichel. We have here with us cute-man, people.
E-Wrestling Mark: Nick Diamante.
Dave Fenichel: Yeah well, I'm an entertaining kid
Dave Fenichel: Nick Diamante thinks like I do. Even back in the day when I blatantly ignored his challenges and pathetic attempts to draw heat, I always knew that we had the next me of the circle. He's pulled some pretty controversial things, but out of character he's a good guy, and in character he's great. There's not much else to say.
E-Wrestling Mark: Vince DiNardo A.K.A "The Outlaw"
Dave Fenichel: Think back to when you were younger. Remember you when you were playing baseball on the street, and there was always that one little kid who wanted to hang out with the big kids? You know, the one who would do ANYTHING to impress them, but usually failed miserably? That's Vinny. I still like the guy though, he's actually pretty cool.
E-Wrestling Mark: Taso.
Dave Fenichel: He's a complete loser. His entire life is e-wrestling, he's a miserable person, and he's not even all that good. Besides, doesn't it strike you as a bit shady when a 35 year old associates with all 18 year olds?
E-Wrestling Mark: Chandler.
Dave Fenichel: Another guy I'm pretty tight with. He's been a great champion in e-feds, and he's a really cool guy outside of feds. I remember when WCW started to suck, and everyone would stop watching it. Everyone but us. Every MOnday, week after week, we'd sit there at our computers, talk to each other, and critique every single segment.
E-Wrestling Mark: Yeah, I never stopped watching WCW either.
E-Wrestling Mark: Tim Cryderman?
Dave Fenichel: Good old Cracker. That kid makes me laugh, he really does. He is a great roleplayer, sucks as a president, and it somewhere in the middle as a person.
E-Wrestling Mark: Timmy Aaron.
Dave Fenichel: He's done more things to rile me up than anyone else in this circle, but in the end we get along fine. I respect him because he's been with me and this circle since the beginning, he's one of the originators and most prominant members. There will always be heat between us, but I think it's mostly in character and e-fed related.
E-Wrestling Mark: D-Rob.
Dave Fenichel: A cum guzzling twat faced nimpho geisha bitch. Ok, not really, but I promised myself I'd use that phrase sometime during the interview...hehe. He's obviously a great roleplayer, and though I think he sometimes gets more credit than he deserves, he's shown that he gets the job done. He's a model of consistancy, except when it comes to condom usage.
E-Wrestling Mark: FWL.
Dave Fenichel: Bottom Line: A man with a kid on the way can't run an e-fed. What is D-ROB going to do? Write the results while he's feeding his kid a bottle? Let's be real here.
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright, now. Now, you will answer with the name of the wrestler that first comes to mind, deal?
Dave Fenichel: alright, fair enough
E-Wrestling Mark: Most Underrated wrestler.
Dave Fenichel: Joey Fury
Dave Fenichel: Fury finished 3rd in the prestigious Battlebowl Invitation Tournament that I promoted, yet he still gets no respect and no push anywhere he goes.
Dave Fenichel: he's a great roleplayer and an easy guy to get along with. There's not much more you can ask for.
E-Wrestling Mark: Most Overrated wrestler.
Dave Fenichel: Shane Douglas.
E-Wrestling Mark: Best Developed Character.
Dave Fenichel: I would have to say Liger. He added a human side, and gave his character depth that no one else bothered to do.
E-Wrestling Mark: Biggest Jobber.
Dave Fenichel: Brandon Kearse
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright. Easiest to work with?
Dave Fenichel: hmmm
Dave Fenichel: Diamante
E-Wrestling Mark: Hardest to work with?
Dave Fenichel: Hoke Smart
E-Wrestling Mark: Best fed-head.
Dave Fenichel: Tom Stone
E-Wrestling Mark: Worst fed-head.
Dave Fenichel: tie: Hoke Smart/Tim Cryderman
E-Wrestling Mark: Best ACF World Champion.
Dave Fenichel: Brian Nash
E-Wrestling Mark: Best ACF Wrestler.
Dave Fenichel: not to sound egotistical, but me. Without me, none of those other guys would have ever had the chance to shine.
E-Wrestling Mark: Best EWA World Champion.
Dave Fenichel: Chandler.
E-Wrestling Mark: Best EWA Wrestler.
Dave Fenichel: Serial Thrylla, he was the franchise
E-Wrestling Mark: Wrestler you would most likely contact next to join HIW?
Dave Fenichel: the wrestler that joins on tonight's card.
E-Wrestling Mark: E-wrestler you would like to work with?
Dave Fenichel: Diamante.
E-Wrestling Mark: Best gimmick.
Dave Fenichel: TBL
E-Wrestling Mark: Worst gimmick.
Dave Fenichel: there's too many to count
E-Wrestling Mark: Alright.
E-Wrestling Mark: Last but not least...
E-Wrestling Mark: Inside E-Wrestling . . . . . . . . . . yes or no?
Dave Fenichel: *shakes head, and leaves*
E-Wrestling Mark: No man! Don't leave! Damnit! Great way to finish off my first interview!
