Starting today, I will be doing a recap of every single EWA and SDW card,
including match outcomes and what I thought of the product. Today, we've
got the recap of SDW's 3rd and final house show. It's kind of difficult to
grade, because the matches were just done in summary form, and there really
wasn't much happening. Anyway, here goes nothing:
Jason Hellfield d Michael Lavender via a reverse russian legsweep. After
the match, "Shadow", formerly of the GWA, attacked Hellfield in the ring,
and the two preceded to brawl to the back
Nothing out of the ordinary, but nothing I'd call bad either. At least it
shows that fueds are being established. Both Hellfield and Shadow are
capable of putting out good work, so I look forward to the upcoming fued
between the two.
Carter Caldwell d Logan Carter and Carson Walker via a top rope german
suplex on Carter. Carson Walker walked out of the match before it even
started, making it 1 on 1.
Your basic squash. I've never seen this Carter Caldwell guy before, but it
looks like he could be a major player in SDW if given the right angle. I
don't understand why Walker chose to waste his time coming out to the ring,
only to leave before the match. Something fishy is definitely going on
there. Maybe it will lead to a Caldwell/Walker match at a later time, who
knows.
The first overdrive is taking place on January 9th in the America West
Arena
Cool. Should be interesting.
Cyrus Cross d Vito Castorelli via a torture rack submission
Blah. I'm not a fan of either one of these guys, and don't see them going
anywhere in SDW. Definitely just a filler match.
The Phoenix Suns Gorilla makes a surprise appearance to entertain the SDW
crowd. Shane Matthews comes out, and tries to order the Gorilla out of the
ring before getting his pants pulled down while he's not looking.
Yuck. This was really lame. I do however like Shane Matthews, and I think
it's too bad that it looks like he's going to be relegated to cruiserweight
matches and being the brunt of bad jokes. SDW has a superstar on their
hands if they use him right.
Shane Matthews d Corey Simmons and Cody Powell vs a Starton Bomb
Another weak match, with Matthews dominating both men. That doesn't say
much for the tag team division of SDW does it?
Liger chants
*Yawn*
Johnny Cyanide d Pete Boyar
I like both these guys, but once again, there wasn't much to this match.
Cyanide looks like he might be in line for a major push though, so we'll
have to be on the lookout for him.
More Liger chants
*Louder yawn* Seriously, this kind of thing doesn't come off well unless
the results are done in play by play format. I understand that they are
trying to hype up Liger's return, as well they should, but this is the wrong
way to do it.
Ghosthand and Dan Klitz wrestled to a time limit draw
While this was the only decent match on the card, I have a big problem with
the way that both Ghostband and Dan Klitz were protected. The two of them
no showed this week just as everyone else did, and should have been treated
in the same manner. Nevertheless, the match was good, and I fully expect
both men to contend for the SDW world title.
As the fans started to leave the arena, "Denial" starts to play, sending
them into a frenzy, only to have them be disappointed as it was Legacy, and
not Liger that made his first public appearance to end the show
Alright, now we're talking. Legacy is a major player, and one of my
personal favorites. I don't know why he decided to come out to Liger's
music, but it leaves us with something to work with going into the first
Overdrive show on January 9th. Definitely not a bad way to end the show.
OVERALL: Terrible wrestling on a house show means a terrible grade. While
it looks like some of the angles that were started tonight have potential,
it's too early to tell. However, with the first "real" card coming up in a
couple of weeks, I expect things to get much better. Grade: 3 out of 10.
Don't let this fool you though, I think SDW has a strong foundation, and the
potential to be great for a long time to come.
