SPIDERS

Many spiders are found where we live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They are not true insects but they are related.

Spiders use silk to spin webs. At the back end of the spider are spinnerets. Sticky silk comes out of the spinnerets when the spider builds its web. We have found webs in trees, on walls in houses, by drainpipes, in basements, in corners of buildings, inside cupboards, on chair legs, and even in tents and on toilets seats when we are camping.

Spiders use the webs to trap their food. Sometimes we see spiders swinging on a silky thread near their web. Spiders can bite. They store venom inside their body. When they bite the venom comes out their fangs. If you get a bite your skin might swell and turn red.

Ants

Ants are true insects. They have three body parts. These parts are the head, thorax and abdomen. They have a pair of antennae on their head. They have three pairs of legs attached to their thorax. Ants have sharp jaws.

There are many kinds of ants. In the Edmonton area we have seen red ants, black ants and carpenter ants. Sometimes we see army ants.

Ants live together in colonies. Their homes can be found in many different places. Some live under the ground. They dig tunnels and have spaces like little rooms. We sometimes see the entrance to ants homes when we walk on the sidewalk. Some ants live in the stems of plants. Some ants build ant hills on top of the ground. We have seen ant hills beside sidewalks, on the grass, in forests, and in our backyards.

Ants have to eat to stay alive. Some ants eat grass and leaves. Some eat wood. Some eat meat such as other insects.

Ants are very interesting.

Bees

Bees are insects that live in Edmonton. Bees have a head, thorax and abdomen. They have six legs and a pair of antennae. They have wings so they can fly. Bees have different jobs in the hive. Most are worker bees. They suck nectar from the flowers and store it in their tummies. They bring the nectar back to their hives and make it into honey. The bees eat the honey.

Bees can sting people. If you stay still they might think you are a statue and won't sting you. Bees are helpful insects because they make honey. Honey tastes good on toast.

Every lady bug has black spots on its back. The spots tell how old the lady bug is. Lady bugs fly. Lady bugs are true insects.

Mosquito

When a mosquito bites you and sucks your blood your skin starts to swell up. When it sucks your blood it replaces the blood with poison. Mosquitoes fly from person to person to get more blood.
