Chapter 1

“Keith! You’re shaking like a leaf!” I exclaimed. “Tell me, what’s your big news?”
“Actually it’s a question.” Keith surprised me by dropping to one knee. “Will you marry me?”
My mouth dropped open as he slid the diamond onto my slender finger. I had never even considered marrying Keith. In the years we had been together the thought had never crossed my mind. But then again, I had never considered myself the marrying kind. But as I stood there, looking into his hopeful face, I realized that it was probably the next step in our relationship.
“Yes,” I told him. “I will marry you.”
Keith’s face relaxed into a cheesy grin. He picked me up, spinning me round in a circle. I giggled. He could be such a clown sometimes, but he was a great guy. Yes, this was the next step.
Later on that night I was sitting in my apartment gazing down at my diamond, a rerun of Friends was playing in the background.
I had been dating Keith since my junior year in high school. I was now a junior in collage. Four years. Now we were going to be married. It hadn’t hit me like lighting like I had always dreamed it would have when I was young, but as I had grown older I realized how unreliable those feelings could be. Keith and I had something stronger, something long lasting.
We both had great jobs. Both were secure in our positions. Neither of us would be losing our jobs anytime soon. We also share the same views on children, religion, and mostly on politics. So, I guess you could say we had a lot in common.
My mother had not been thrilled when I had called to tell her I was getting married. She said I should experience more of the world before I settled down with my high school sweetheart. But, I told her I was ready. I was an adult, nearly nineteen. Keith and I had been dating for years. This was the next step.
