Welcome to my fan pages on Deep Purple

I am a fan of Deep Purple as you would have proberly quessed by the title.
I live in Invercargill, New Zealand and would like to see Deep Purple rock  these shores again.

The first record I heard of there's was Black Night at a school dance way back in ''71, which I asked to be played again & again. Then in ''73 the classic Smoke on the Water was being played on the air waves & before long our local bands were playing it at dances & at parks (in the summer every second Sunday there was a concert known as Jumping Sunday at the Park).

A friend of my cousins had this tape playing in his car & I asked what group was that & he said it was In Rock by Deep Purple (as I had not heard any other records of theres apart from the singles), well I was hooked from that moment on,  the next day I brought that LP & have been collecting ever since.

You can check out my collection on link down the bottom of the page.

I missed there January 1976 concert here at Christchurch due to work committments. I would have to wait till there reunioun tour in 1984 but the Christchurch show was canned, rumour has it they the promoters couldn't give a guarantee to keep the noise levels down so they couldn't get a permit for the out door concert.  So the next event I thought I would catch them was on the Battle Rages On tour in Auckland canned again, this time the promoters say 48,000 tickets sold was not enough to cover expenses
and I was starting to think that I would never see DP live in New Zealand.

In 1999 I was lucky enough to make a trip across the ditch to Australia and catch Deep Purple live in Adelaide since they didn't make it here on the Abandon tour.
I am pleased to say I'm glad I did, what a show 2 hours of new and classic material in full flight. For these who didn't get to see them I recommend you get a copy of the Total Abandon CD or video and enjoy.

Early 2001 I decided to get a tattoo of Deep Purple (which I had been thinking about for some time), so I thought I would get a back piece. Starting off with Deep Purple InRock faces around it will be other band  members with parts of album covers.

I also got a personalize number plate INROCK for my car.

2004 Deep Purple make the trip to the "island of the long white cloud" again, I got to see them in Christchurch town hall, well what a show they had the foundations rockin'.

2006 Deep Purple making another trip to our shores in April, this time I have my ticket for me and my son to see them in Wellington, it's a pity they are not coming to the South Island, but the trip was well worth it. What a  great Show  with a mix of new and old.
here' some pics I took at the concert.

A Brief History
The history of the band can be found on their offical homepage
Highway Star and many other links on the web, so here it will be my brief outlook.

As every fan has there favourite line up ( or incarnation of DP) and often refered to MK I, MK II, MK III, MK VI, MK V, MK VI, MK VII, MK VIII etc.

The first line up of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Rod Evans (vocals), Nick Simper (bass), Jon Lord (organ), Ian Paice (drums);  hit the charts with Hush followed up with Kentucky Woman and Emmaretta.

But with a couple of member changes with  Ian Gillan on vocals and Roger Glover on bass, came a much heavier sound and hit the singles charts with Black Night a non LP track but recorded  during the
INROCK sessions.
Other hits from this lineup included Strange Kind of Woman, Fireball, Never Before, and the all time classic Smoke on the Water, Woman from Tokyo.

Further line changes seen David Coverdale on vocals and Glen Hughes on bass/vocals, a more bluesy sound with this line up, some  singles released, Might just take your life, Stormbringer.

Ritchie Blackmore was next to leave (forming his own band, his home page can be found
here) his replacement on guitar was Tommy Bolin, single released You keep on moving. The band then split up in 1976.

1984 DP Mk II had reformed as what is regarded as the classic Deep  Purple line up, they had hit the charts with Perfect Strangers.

Changes in the band again with Ian Gillan leaving and Joe Lynn Turner coming in on vocals (band sounding a bit like Rainbow).

Ian Gillan rejoined again for the groups 21st anniversary releasing the Battle Rages On, but conflict again within the band saw Ritchie Blackmore leave and being replaced on guitar by Steve Morse.

Jon Lord retires, replaced by Don Airey
