| The Katimavik
"Experience" is something almost impossible to
explain to someone who hasn't participated in the
program. It is something completely different to
each person who does it, but a lasting experience for
almost everyone. I think that the official description of Katimavik is something like: Katimavik is a program for Canadian youth between the ages of 17 and 21. The program is 8 months long, during which the participants live in groups of 11 (idealy) from all over Canada and partake in group workshops by night, and volunteer by day. (It doesn't quite work that way...) For me, it all began January sixth, 1999. In the Calgary airport awaiting my flight (which turned out to be delayed for 2 hours) I met 3 fellow Katimavictoms. Two girls, Jamie and Candace, who were eventually headed to Willow Bunch Sask, and Tyler, who would travel with me to Moose Jaw. Just imagine climbing onto a plane, with relative strangers, to head off somewhere, to join this program, and none of us 100% sure of what we were getting ourselves into. |
