Written before anyone close to me had died, I conceived the idea of a suicide by someone who had no idea how much someone else loved him. A lot of people have read this one and not picked up that the chap in the song has killed himself and I am describing the love he could have had, but there it is, now you know. The line "you only fall one story at a time" refers to lies, not jumping off of buildings. And of course, "you only love one time in her life" is her belief there is no one left for her.
