Yates Oberon joined the Air Force when he was eighteen because he didn't feel like college was an option. Though he was encouraged to attend the academy. After graduating from the academy, he was assigned all over the United States and the world. On one of his assignments he met Julia and then later married her. They were married only two years before Julia died from cancer. Yates never really recovered from his wife's death. He never remarried and instead buried himself in his work, which later paid off as he rose through the ranks and eventually made it to Brigadier General and in command of Stargate Command. He and Julia never had children, so the children of the SGC (now Genesis) were the closest to children or grandchildren he'd ever get. And would do anything for those children and/or grandchildren, but can still remain professional.
