| Personal History: |
Halatia Portello comes form a traditional Italian family. She is a devout Roman Catholic, has an odd obsession with pasta, and if you were to ever lay a hand on/insult a member of her family, you would wish that you had never been born, at least, you would if you survived the encounter. It has been rumored, that the Portello family has close ties to the Mafia. This rumor has never been proven, however, it has also never been denied. There were never such a thing as "personal space" for her, growing up as she did with more or less her entire extended family surrounding her at every waking moment, so she never quite picked up on the art of tact. However, due to her lack of participation in the family “business”, a large rift had grown between Hayl and the rest of her family by the time she reached the SGC. She was never the smartest in her class, but she always was one of the hardest workers. Portellos didn't know the meaning of relaxing. Constantly on the go, a four year/three season athlete, President of National Honor Society, and always managing to scrape by with a 4.0 average, though it involved a considerable amount more work than she wished to put into homework. She went to the Academy, mostly because it offered a challenge, both academically and physically, and it wasn't far from her home and family. She excelled there, and went on to gain a bachelors in Astrophysics, minoring specifically in the study of wormholes, however, she shunned from pursuing a Ph.D., because it required another good 6 years, and frankly, she was getting bored of school. Instead she pursued government work (fulfilling the nagging voice in the back of her mind that said she owed the country something in return for her family's somewhat less than legal interactions), was hired to be a member of the military liaison to NASA. After working there for two years, greatly building her knowledge of the life span of stars, she was enlisted by the Pentagon to work on the Stargate Project. For two more years, Hayl had been studying the Stargate. She’d run every feasible situation, every plausible problem on the simulator. She knew how to solve almost any problem with the DHD as long as she had some duct tape. After her stint at the Pentagon, she was moved to the SGC in Colorado Springs, where she was originally assigned to SG-13, but was mostly moved about the squads as the need for an Astrophysicist arose. Being back in Colorado, however, came with a curse. Her family started stalking her the moment that she stepped off of the plane, attempting to bring her back into the folds of the clan, or at the very least, ensure that she wasn’t going to put the rest of the family at risk with her gallivanting within the government. No one would ever actually lay a hand on her, for not only was she the youngest child of Don Portello’s oldest son, but she was also the Mafia leader’s only granddaughter. As long as her grandfather was alive, she would remain safe. However, he was growing old, and a power struggle had begun deep in the underworld of crime, and the Portello’s name was beginning to lose it’s sway. Hayl knew that it was only a matter of time before her name found its way to the top of the proverbial hit-list. She hadn’t been on base for more than 2 months when she took the offer to join the offworld colony of Genesis, for the lure of being permanently offworld was simply too strong to pass by.
