| Nit Removal * In active/recent infestations the nits are close to the scalp (less than 1 cm from the scalp) * Removal of nits makes it easier to see if the person gets lice again. * Use good lighting and a magnifying glass if needed to better see the nits. * Check the entire head daily for nits and remove any for the next 3 weeks and then check 2 times a week for the next 2 weeks. * Remove nits using fingers. Plastic nit combs do not work as well. If you wish to use a comb, use a metal, fine long toothed comb which will help to pull the nit off the shaft of the hair. Check with a pharmacy for this product. Head Lice Checklist: [ ] If your child has head lice or nits in his or her hair, you should do something about it the same day to prevent spread to someone else in your family, daycare or school. [ ] Reassure the child or adult with head lice that he/she will be okay, but that the treatment and nit removal will take some time and patience. [ ] Treat the head lice with a cream or shampoo recommended by a doctor or pharmacist. other members in the home that have head lice or nits or sleep in the same bed should be treated at the same time. [ ] Remove all nits at the time of treatment and daily for the next 3 weeks. [ ] Make sure you check everyone in your family for nits or head lice. This should be done daily for 3 weeks. [ ] Notify others who may have been in contact with your child, including schools, daycares, friends, and relatives. [ ] Children may return to daycare or school after the first treatment has been completed and nits removed. [ ] Wash headgear, pillowcases, and towels in hot soapy water for at least 20 minutes. [ ] Non-washable items may be drycleaned, ironed or stored in sealed bags for ten days or frozen for 48 hours. [ ] Retreat the person with the same cream or shampoo 7 days after the initial treatment. [ ] Call the Saskatchewan Health Line (1-877-800-0002) if you have any questions or concerns about head lice. |
